ASTON, PA - The Cabrini baseball team opened their 2020 slate with a convincing 10-2 victory over Eastern University at Maplezone Sports Institute in Aston, PA.
The Blue and White received strong performances on the bump from all five pitchers who saw action, headlined by senior
Kyran Weemaels who earned the victory after three scoreless innings of relief.
Sophomore
Jonathan Baker earned the start and allowed two earned in three innings, while striking out three. Juniors
Drew Swire and
Mike Valerio, along with sophomore
Mike Gama logged an inning each to finish things off as they combined for two strikeouts.
Offensively, the Cavaliers were paced by junior
Brendan Van Belle who finished 3-5 with three runs and an RBI. Junior
Chris Santana and sophomore
Garrett Laraia tallied two RBI's each, while juniors
Brian Protesto and
Steven Priest rounded out the Cavs with multiple hits. Senior
Shaun Stackhouse added a hit, a run scored and a pair of stolen bases.
The Eagles opened the scoring in the top of the first after pushing across a run on a groundout to short. The Cavs quickly answered in their half of the inning after putting runners on first and second with one out. A errant throw to first on a ground ball off the bat of junior
JD Barrett allowed the Cavs to even things at one a piece.
Eastern retook the lead in the top of the third thanks to a sharp double down the left field line from Britton Lawrence. It would be the visitors last lead of the afternoon.
Cabrini siezed control in the bottom half of the inning as Stackhouse led things off with single up the middle and promptly swiped second base. A walk from junior
Mack McKisson put runners on first and second for Van Belle who delivered a single to right to draw even.
An ensuing wild pitch allowed McKisson to score and handed the Cavs their first lead of the game in the process. Protesto capped the frame with a double down the left field line to plate Van Belle.
The Cavs busted the game open in the fifth inning as they struck for five runs on five hits. A two RBI double from Laraia and a two RBI single from Santana highlighted the crooked frame for the Blue and White.
Cabrini would go on to add another run in the eighth for the eventual 10-2 final.
Eastern's Freddy Yahn paced the visitors with a pair of hits.
Following today's game, the Cavs improve 1-0 on the young season. They will now travel south to Florida as they prepare for nine games in six days, beginning on Sunday, February 23rd against Augustana College. Game time is slated for 9am.
