Women's Lacrosse Rides Hot Start to Win over Ursinus

RADNOR, PA – The Cabrini women's lacrosse team rode a dominant first half to a 12-5 win over Ursinus College today in the team's first appearance at Edith Robb Dixon Field.

The Cavaliers improved to 2-0 on the young season after outshooting the visiting Bears 25-7 in the first half en route to a 8-2 halftime lead.

Junior Taylor Dimmerling paced the Blue and White offense with six points on four goals and two assists. Sophomore Dana Carlson tallied five draw controls and three caused turnovers and joined the program's 100 career point club with four point in the victory, reaching the mark in just 24 games.

Sophomore Kelly Sweeney paired a goal, and assist and four ground balls, while junior Lauren Hughes added three points and three ground balls.

Sophomore Shea Neary chipped in with four ground balls, three caused turnovers and two draw controls, while classmate Sam Hamalak secured five saves and six ground balls to earn the win in the Cabrini cage.

The early scoring came fast and furious, as the teams combined for three goals in the opening 80 seconds of play, including Blue and White goals by Sweeney and Carlson.  

Leading 2-1, the Cavaliers slowed the game and reeled off five unanswered goals to take a 7-1 lead on Neary's goal with 6:41 to play. Dimmerling posted three points during the run, while Carlson added two, including her centennial point.

Hughes netted her second goal of the stanza in the period's final minutes to send the Blue and White into the halftime break with a commanding 8-2 lead.  

The Bears cut the Cabrini lead in half with back to back goals midway through the second half, but the Cavaliers responded immediately, as Carlson and Dimmerling scored in a span of 45 seconds to rebuild the six goal cushion.

The Cavaliers extended their lead later in the period, as Dimmerling and freshman Victoria Zielke added goals in a 61 second span.

Junior Grace Langen scored two goals for Ursinus (0-1), while sophomore Becca Lewis added five caused turnovers and five ground balls. Freshman goaltender Alexa Machado notched 14 saves in her collegiate debut.

Prior to today's game, Cabrini head coach Jackie Neary was honored for earning her 300th career victory to end the 2019 campaign. Neary became just the 17th coach in NCAA history to reach the mark when the Blue and White captured its first ECAC championship with a 15-10 win over Drew on May 12.

The Cavaliers will not return to action until March 10, when they play host to No. 13 TCNJ (0-0). The opening draw in slated for 6pm at Edith Robb Dixon Field.
