AUBURNDALE, FL - The Cabrini baseball team fell in extra innings this afternoon as Castleton University claimed a 3-2 victory in 11 innings.
Freshman
Matthew Esquijerosa toed the rubber for his first collegiate start and turned in a strong 7.2 innings. The rookie scattered seven hits and allowed just one run, while also picking up a strikeout. Sophomore
Nicholas Gares was stuck with the loss after allowing a run in three innings.
Offensively, the Cavs managed just four hits as juniors
Mack McKisson, and Brendan Van Bell, along with sophomore
Brandon Loner and freshman
Josh Piccarreta tallied one each. Sophomore
Garrett Laraia and senior
Shaun Stackhouse accounted for the Cavs two runs.
The Spartans pushed across the game's first run thanks to a sacrifice fly from Reece De Castro in the top of the second.
Cabrini would answer in the fifth as they loaded the bases with one out for Stackhouse. The veteran delivered a well placed sac bunt to plate Laraia and even things at one apiece.
Three innings later, Van Bell delivered the clutch hit to hand the Cavs a 2-1 advantage heading into the ninth. The Cavs' lead wouldn't last long, however as Castleton plated the tying run in the top of the ninth following a Cavalier throwing error.
An RBI single from the Spartans Davis Mikell put the visitors up 3-2 in the top of the 11th. The Cavs would go down quietly in the bottom half of the inning for the eventual 3-2 final.
Following today's game, the Cavs move to 3-4 overall. They will next face Purchase College on Friday, February 28th at 9:45am.
