Scheuren Pitches Softball to Split vs. Widener

RADNOR, PA – The Cabrini softball team made its Cabrini Field debut this afternoon, as it played host to Widener University in a nonconference doubleheader.

The Cavaliers (6-6) could not overcome two big innings in the opener, falling 8-4, but early offense and a pitching gem from junior Casey Scheuren propelled the Blue and White to a 3-1 win on the nightcap.

Game 1: Widener 8, Cabrini 4
After a pair of hitless innings, Widener opened the scoring in the top of the third with a lead off home run by Malia Calciano. The Pride added three more runs in the frame, building a 4-0 cushion.

The Cavaliers answered in the bottom of the inning. Sophomore Kaitlyn Martin opened the inning with a single before scoring on a single by sophomore Faith Pitsikoulis. The Cavaliers evened the score two batters later, as junior Amber Seamen blasted a shot over the centerfield fence for a three run homer.

The tie game did not last long, as the Pride opened the fourth with another solo home run. An infield error led to two more runs in the fourth, as the Cavaliers fell behind 7-4 midway through the fourth inning.

The Blue and White looked to make another comeback, but could only must one more base hit over its final four at bats.

Martin went 2-3 with a run scored, while Seamen recorded all three Blue and White RBI. Sophomore Grace Stairiker suffered the loss in the pitcher's circle after allowing six earned runs on seven hits with five strike outs.

Game 2: Cabrini 3, Widener 1
The Cavaliers got off to a great start, as Pitsikoulis led off with a double before scoring on a Seamen double. The junior scored two batters later, as the Cavaliers took advantage of a Pride error to build a 2-0 lead.

The advantage proved to be more than enough for Scheuren, who kept the Widener base runners at bay for much of the game. The Pride made its only offensive mark in the top of the fifth inning on a solo home run by Lindsey Cooper.

The Cavaliers got the run back in the bottom of the sixth, as junior Olivia Young opened the frame with her first home run of the season.

Widener threatened in the top of the seventh, loading the bases with just one out, but Scheuren was up to the task, as an infield fielder's choice and a line out ended the threat and the game.

The junior scattered seven hits over seven innings with three strike outs to secure the victory. Young recorded a pair of base hits, an RBI and a run scored in the win.

The Cavaliers will make the short trip to Eastern University (3-5) on Thursday for the annual Battle for Eagle Road. The nonconference doubleheader is slated to begin at 3pm.
