Baseball Falls by 5-2 Final in Road Matchup Against Blazers

FREDERICK, MD - The Cabrini baseball team dropped a nonconference road matchup this afternoon against the Hood College Blazers by way of a 5-2 final.

The Diamond Cavs tallied five hits and five errors as they moved to 5-6 on the young season.

Offensively, the Blue and White were led by juniors Mack McKisson and Brendan Van Belle who tallied a hit and an RBI each. Classmate Steven Priest, senior Joe Aurite and freshman Josh Piccarreta rounded out the Cavs to mark the hit column as each recorded a single.

On the bump, sophomore Jonathan Baker was saddled with the loss after allowing four runs (one earned) and nine hits in seven innings of work. Baker added four strikeouts, while walking two. Junior Drew Swire came on in relief and allowed a run on three hits in the eighth inning.

The Blazers pushed across a runs in the first, third, fourth and fifth inning to take a 4-0 lead. An Andrew Wenner solo shot highlighted Hood's first five innings offensively.

Hood's Jake Howell earned the start for the hosts and tossed three strong innings as he allowed just a lone hit and walk, while striking out four. Jahlin Jean Baptiste collected the victory for the Blazers as he came on in relief.

The Cavs found some success against Jean Baptiste as they pushed across their first run in the top of the sixth. Following a pair of singles from Priest and Aurite, a deep McKisson fly out moved Priest to third for Van Belle. The junior delivered and slapped a single to left to plate his classmate and trim the Cavs' deficit to 4-1.

Cabrini would add another run in the eighth off a sac fly from McKisson, but the hosts would close the door in their half of the inning with an RBI single to push their lead back to three runs. Cabrini would go down in order in the top of the ninth for the aformentioned 5-2 final.

Andrew Wenner led the Blazers after finishing 2-4 with two runs and an RBI.

Following today's game, the Cavs move to 5-6 overall. They will look to get back in the win column when they host No. 23 ranked Rowan University at Cabrini Carroll Field tomorrow at noon following a quick turnaround.
