ST. MARY'S CITY, MD – The Cabrini field hockey team suffered its first Atlantic East Conference defeat this evening, as the Cavaliers fell to the St. Mary's College Seahawks 2-1 in the final game of the regular season..
By virtue of today's loss, the Blue and White have secured the number two seed in next week's conference tournament. Cabrini also received a bye into Wednesday's semifinal round and will face the highest winning seed after Saturday's quarterfinal round.
The Blue and White struggled to find its offense in the first half, as it failed to record a shot or force a penalty corner in the opening 30 minutes.
The Seahawks took advantage in the ninth minute, taking a lead on a Jill Hayden goal. The home side doubled its lead in the 20th minute, as Gabrielle Corder recorded the only shot of the period.
Cabrini turned up its pressure in the third quarter, outshooting St. Mary's 6-0 and forcing eight penalty corners. Unfortunately for the Cavaliers, they could not solve the Seahawks' defensive game plan.
After fighting off two penalty corners and three shots early in the final period, the Cavaliers finally got on the scoreboard in the 59th minute, as sophomore
Daly Ewing put back a rebound from a
Caroline Gallagher shot and save.
After coming up empty on the offensive end in the first half, Cabrini recorded 10 second half penalty corners and all nine of its shots. Gallagher led the Cavaliers with three shots, one more than junior
Olivia Sims.
Freshman goaltender
Courtney Keith tallied three saves in the loss.
