Field Hockey Opens Atlantic East Play with 5-2 Win

RADNOR, PA – The Cabrini field hockey team snapped its three game losing streak today, as they opened Atlantic East Conference play with a 5-2 win over Marywood.

The victory improved the Blue and White to 5-6 on the season and marked its first win over the Pacers in their last four meetings.

After a scoreless opening quarter, the Pacers got on the board in the 19th minute, as Mackenzie Hoats scored the first of her two goals on the night. The lead was short-lived, as Kaitlyn Martin evened the score less than 40 seconds later.

Despite outshooting the Pacers 10-3 in the first half, the Cavaliers managed just one goal as the game went into the halftime break even at 1-1.

Midway through the third quarter the Blue and White took control of the action. Junior Maura Tumelty found sophomore Daly Ewing in the 39th minute to give the Cavaliers to lead for good on the sophomore's first career goal.

Cabrini added to its lead in the 44th minute, when senior Allison Martin converted a pass from Sara Hussey into the first of her two goals in a three minute span. Ewing's pass found Martin in the opening minute of the final quarter, as the Blue and White's lead swelled to 4-1.

The Pacers pulled to within 4-2 on Hoats' 48th minute marker, but Ewing's 59th minute tally closed the score book.

The Cavaliers outshot the Pacers 14-4 on the day, with Martin's four shots leading the way. Classmate Kaitlyn Martin and freshman Adrianna Jones added three attempts each.

Freshman goaltender Courtney Keith made one save to secure the victory.

The Cavaliers will return to action on Tuesday, when they face Alvernia in nonconference action. Game time is set for 7pm at Edith Robb Dixon Field.
