RADNOR, PA - The Cabrini University women's basketball team opened their season with a commanding 74-41 victory over the visiting Eastern Eagles in the annual Battle of Eagle Road.
The Blue and White outscored the Eagles 21-10, including 7-for-10 from the field, in the second quarter and never looked back as the home team held onto a double-digit lead throughout the remainder of the game.
Junior
Miranda Liebtag paced the offense with a game high 17 points, while adding three boards and two assists. Including Liebtag, a total of four Cavaliers put up double digits in points, graduate student
Ashley Tutzauer and sophomore
Katie Rodriguez each had 14 points while sophomore
Brielle Fitzpatrick rounded out the Cavs double figures with 11 points of her own.
Eastern opened the game with a 7-2 run that spanned the first three minutes to seize the early momentum. The Cavs responded with a 12-0 spurt of their own, highlighted by a pair of treys from Tutzauer, to double up the Eagles 14-7. The visitors tacked on three points late in the first frame but the Cavaliers ended the quarter ahead 14-10.
Cabrini started the second frame with a 10-0 run with five points apiece from Rodriguez and Liebtag, 24-10. Eastern's Ashya Gaddy put an end to the run with a layup as the Eagles went on to outscore the home team 7-3 over the next 2:30 of play to pull back within 10 points of the lead, 27-17. The Blue and White outscored Eastern 8-3 over the remainder of the first half to make it 35-20 headed into the break.
The Cavaliers kicked off the second half in similar fashion with nine unanswered points highlighted by two three-pointers from Liebtag, 44-20. The Eagles went on a 7-0 run over the next minute and change but any hopes of a comeback were squashed as Cabrini finished the quarter with an 8-1 spurt to put the game out of reach, 52-28.
The home team ran away with the game as the Cavaliers outscored the Eagles 22-13 over the final ten minutes of play for the 74-41 victory. Fitzpatrick led the way in the final frame with nine of her 11 points coming in the fourth quarter.
In total, the Cavs shot 56% from the field, 8-16 from beyond the arc, compared to the Eagles' 21.4% and 3-14. Cabrini also held a 44-33 advantage in rebounds, including a 33-17 advantage in defensive rebounds.
Freshamn
Giana Rullo tallied a game-high 11 boards, while Eastern's Taryn Woodson led the visitors with 10 rebounds.
Following tonight's game, the Cavaliers improve to 1-0 on the young season and will turn their attention to Saturday, November 13th as they host Muhlenberg College. Game time is slated for 1pm.
