CAMDEN, NJ – It had been 629 days since the Cabrini men's basketball team walked off the court with a victory. The streak ended tonight, as the Cavaliers scored a 64-59 win at Rutgers-Camden.
Four Cavaliers scored between 9-13 points in the victory, led by sophomore
Josh Jones, who paired team highs with 13 points and seven rebounds in 20 minutes off the bench.
Sophomore
Aquil Stewart added 12 points, six rebounds and four steals, while senior
Ryan Byars recorded 11 points, two more than junior
Christian Lane.
The Scarlet Raptors opened the scoring with four quick points before Cabrini turned to its defense. The Cavaliers held Rutgers-Camden to just two free throws over the next 12 minutes. Cabrini, subsequently, turned its defense into offense, using a 22-2 run to take a 22-6 lead on senior
Billy Warren's lay-up.
Despite shooting just .387 from the field, the Blue and White owned a 33-19 lead at the half. Cabrini's defense held the Scarlet Raptors to 0-12 from three point range and turned 12 Rutgers-Camden turnovers into 11 points.
The home side pressed to keep the game close, shooting 11-22 from the floor and 6-8 from beyond the arc, but the Cavaliers never allowed them to pull within seven points until the game's final seconds.
Noel Gonzalez led Rutgers-Camden (0-2) with 16 points of the bench.
The Cavaliers will play the last of its season-opening three game road trip on Saturday, as they head to the Big Apple to face Brooklyn College. Tipoff is slated for 3:15pm.
