BALTIMORE, MD – The Cabrini volleyball team saw its 2021 season come to an end tonight, as the Cavaliers suffered a 3-0 loss at No. 1 Johns Hopkins in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament.
The 25-19, 25-12, 25-16 defeat closes the Blue and White's season at 14-18, including 6-0 in the Atlantic East Conference and its first Atlantic East championship.
The loss also closes the careers of Cabrini's three seniors,
Hannah Dalton,
Gina Custer and
Lexi Conte, each of whom posted their best seasons as seniors.
Dalton, the league's Player of the Year, tied the program record with 505 kills, while Custer established a new program mark with 669 digs. Conte came into the season with just 139 career assists and more than tripled that total with 569 this season.
Each of these ladies also made the most of their final matches in the Blue and White. Dalton led the Cavaliers with nine kills, while Custer led the squad with eight digs and Conte 10 assists.
Freshman
Sam Heenan chipped in with six kills, as sophomore
Melanie Cotes-Rivera served up 13 assists.
Despite falling behind early and trailing by as many as nine points midway through the opening set, the Cavaliers did not go away. They slowly climbed back to within five points late on a kill by junior
Victoria Camacho, but the Blue and White could not complete the comeback.
The top ranked Blue Jays found their rhythm in the second set, pairing 19 kills against just three errors. The home side followed a 6-0 run with a 7-0 spurt and never looked back, taking a two sets to none lead.
Cabrini looked to extend the match in the third set, but JHU used a 7-1 run to take a 9-3 lead and never allowed the Cavaliers to make a comeback, as they totaled 12 kills, four service aces and five total blocks in the final frame.
With tonight's win, JHU advances to Saturday's regional semifinal, where it will face Springfield, who topped Rowan 3-2 in another first round match-up. The other regional semifinal pits Tufts against SUNY Cortland.
