Women's Basketball Comes Up Short in Double Overtime Thriller at Albright

RADNOR, PA – The Cabrini University women's basketball battled the Albright College Lions through double-overtime but ultimately fell short as the home team escaped with a 70-62 victory.

Two Cavaliers scored in double figures today, as graduate student Ashley Tutzauer recorded 13 points, four rebounds, two assists, three steals and a block while and Miranda Liebtag also recorded 13 points, a team high eight rebounds, and one block.

Sophomore Katie Rodriguez added nine points, a career high seven blocks, six rebounds, a season high three steals, and two assists. Dani Tyrell finished closely behind with eight points, three rebounds and two assists.

Liebtag wasted little time getting the Blue and White (2-2) on the board as she connected on a layup just 23 seconds into the first quarter. Albright responded by outscoring the Cavs 14-5 over the next four and a half minutes of play, only interrupted by a Tutzauer trey and Rodriguez layup, to put the home team ahead 14-7. Tutzauer responded for Cabrini with a trey and three points from the charity line in a seven point run to close out the first quarter tied at 14 all.

Liebtag opened the second quarter with back-to-back layups to regain the lead for the first time since the opening minute of the game, 18-14. The Lions briefly held a single point lead thanks to a Maggie O'Hare shot from beyond the arc but both teams went on to record seven points over the next five minutes as the Cavs clung on to maintain a four point advantage, 25-21. Albright put up 10 unanswered points over a two minute span before Tyrell ended the run with a three pointer to close the half trailing by three, 31-28.

The Lions opened the second half by scoring eight of the first ten for a nine point advantage, their largest lead of the night, 39-30. The Blue and White outscored the home team 10-8 over the remainder of the third quarter but still found themselves training by seven with one quarter to play, 47-40.

The Cavs silenced the Lions offense in the fourth, limiting the home team to just five points on 2-for-9 shooting from the field. Meanwhile Cabrini went 6-15 from the field, including and 8-0 over the final four minutes of regulation, to send the game into overtime. Tyrell had the opportunity to end the game but a missed trey sent the game into overtime, tied 52-52.

Neither team could gain more than a two point advantage in the first overtime as each team tacked on six additional points, highlighted by a pair of free throws from Liebtag to tie up the game with 33 seconds left on the clock, 58-58.

Playing their second game in three nights the Cavs ran out of steam in double overtime, as the home team opened up a six point margin in the first two plus minutes of action, 64-58. Cabrini was outscored 6-4 down the stretch as Albright came away with a thrilling 70-62 home victory.

The Lions (2-2) had four players finish the game with double figures in scoring, led by seniors Gabby Boggs and Amina Rauf with 18 and 17 points respectively. Boggs also had a game high 14 boards for the double-double and was just three blocks away from making it a triple double.

The Blue and White recorded a season high with 12 blocked shots and attempted a season high 68 shots from the field.

The Cavaliers close out the busy week on Sunday as they head to the Big Apple to face New York University. Tip is slated for 2PM.
