Game Recap: Basketball (Men) |

Offense Stalls Late, as Men's Basketball Falls in Opener

BALTIMORE, MD – The Cavaliers led by four points with 3:02 to play, but could not hold the lead, as the Cabrini men's basketball team suffered a 51-48 loss at Goucher in its season opener.

Junior Christian Lane led the Blue and White with 18 point, while freshman Donoven Mack added eight points. Sophomore Josh Jones tallied six points and shared team high honors with senior Billy Warren with nine rebounds each.

The Gophers built an early six point cushion just five minutes into the game. The Cavaliers responded with a 9-0 run over the next five minutes, as junior Ryan Byars' lay-up put Cabrini ahead 13-10.

The home side regain a slim advantage at 16-15 at the 6:55 mark, but freshman Marquis Tomlin hit Jones for a lay-up that sparked an 8-0 Cabrini spurt. A pair of Byars' free throws capped the run, giving the Cavaliers a 23-16 lead with just under three minutes left in the stanza.

Despite shooting just .286, the Cavaliers carried a 23-20 lead into the halftime break.

Both teams led by as many as five points in a second half that included 10 tied and 10 lead changes.  Goucher's five point cushion came at the 10:06 mark and was followed by a Cabrini 8-0, as Warren's lay-up put the Cavaliers ahead 40-37 with 7:47 to play.

The Cavaliers maintained their lead over the next several minutes and led 46-42 after Tomlin hit Lane for a bucket with 3:02 left on the clock.

Cabrini went scoreless over the next 2:12, allowing Goucher to regain a two point cushion. A Mack lay-up leveled the score with 50 seconds to play, but the Gophers scored on the ensuing possession to regain their lead.

Trailing by three in the game's waning seconds, the Cavaliers missed a potentially game-tying three point attempt in the game's final seconds.

The Cavaliers struggled to find their offensive rhythm in the season opener, shooting just over .300 from the floor, including 3-18 from three point range.

While the offense struggled, Cabrini's defensive effort held the Gophers to just .315 shooting and 6-25 from deep. The Cavaliers also forced 17 turnovers, converting them to 18 points.

The Cavaliers will look for their first win of the season on Thursday, when they visit Rutgers-Camden. Tip is slated for 7pm.
