SCRANTON, PA – The Cabrini men's basketball team erased a 10 point second half deficit and led in the final seconds, but could not hold on, as the Cavaliers fell to Scranton 84-80 in overtime.
The Blue and White trailed 50-40 at the 12:03 mark, but responded with a 9-2 spurt, pulling to 52-49 on sophomore
Josh Jones' lay-up three minutes later.
Cabrini's deficit swung between 1-5 points for much of the second half, but trailing 69-64 with 2:14 to play, the Cavaliers made their comeback.
Sophomore
Aquil Stewart nailed a three before senior
Brice Parks' triple with 37 seconds to play gave Cabrini its first lead since 5-4. The Royals came up empty on the ensuing possession before sending junior
Christian Lane to the free throw line in with 17 seconds to play.
The junior calmly knocked down a pair of free throws, extending Cabrini's lead to three. Following a Scranton timeout, the Royals executed their play perfectly, as Jack Lambert connected on his only three pointer of the game, leveling the score with just five seconds to play.
The Cavaliers had one final chance in regulation, but Lane's attempt at the buzzer missed the mark.
Stewart gave the Blue and White an early lead in the extra period, but the home side responded with an 8-0 spurt, giving the Royals an 81-75 lead with just 64 ticks left on the clock.
Stewart led the Cavaliers with 30 points, his second 30 point contest of the season, while playing 42 of 45 minutes. Senior
Ryan Byars added 16 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Jones finished with 12 points, one more than Lane.
Ryan Ems led the Royals with 27 points and 11 boards.
The Cavaliers will break for the Christmas holiday before heading north to Danbury, CT on Dec. 29-30 for the Western CT State Holiday Tournament. Cabrini will face William Paterson on Dec. 29 at 3pm and either the host WestConn or SUNY New Paltz on Thursday.
