GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA – The Cabrini men's basketball team found itself in a halftime deficit it could not overcome, as the Cavaliers fell to Gwynedd Mercy 89-71.
Five Cavaliers scored at least eight points in the loss, led by junior
Christian Lane's 17 points. Freshman
Aquil Stewart went for 16 points and seven assists in his collegiate debut. Junior
Pat Costa chipped in with 10 points of the bench, while classmate
Ryan Byars paired nine points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
The Griffins seized control of the game in the early minutes, using a 10-2 spurt to build a 19-9 lead at the 13:16 mark. Minutes later another 8-0 run put the Blue and White in a 37-20 hole.
The 17 point deficit remained through the end of an opening stanza that saw Cabrini shoot .385 from the floor.
The Cavaliers played the Griffins even in the second half. Cabrini found its shooting touch during the break, connecting on 15-30 second half field goal attempts, including 6-14 from three point range, but the halftime deficit was too much to overcome.
Senior Jaye'Lyn Peebles scored a game-high 18 points to lead a Gwynedd Mercy club that boasted four players in double figures. Sophomore Manny Clark added 17 points, while senior Justin Collins corralled 10 rebounds.
The Cavaliers will return to action on March 25, when they make the trek to Scranton, PA to face Marywood. Tip is slated for 6pm.
