RADNOR, PA - The Cabrini baseball team earned a doubleheader sweep this afternoon after collecting a decisive 13-0 victory in game one and an 11-8 victory in game two over the visiting Wesley College Wolverines.
Game 1
The Cavalier offense exploded for 13 runs on 16 hits in game one, highlighted by a seven run third inning. Senior
Justin Henry paced the offensive outburst after pairing a double and a home run with two runs scored and five RBI's.
Classmate
Steven Priest and junior
Garrett Laraia led the Blue and White with three hits a piece, while seniors
Mack McKisson and
Sean Bernardo collected two hits each. Priest and sophomore
Christian Strickland also tallied long balls on the day. In total, nine different Cavaliers marked the hit column.
Junior
Jonathan Baker matched his offense with an equally impressive showing on the mound as the right hander tossed a complete game shutout, needing just 71 pitches to do so. He allowed just six hits in seven innings, while striking out three and walking none.
As mentioned, Henry delivered the game's first big blow with a towering two-run home run, his first of the season, to left center in the bottom of the second.
The Cavs would push across seven runs an inning later as Priest led things off with a solo shot to center. A pair of singles from Bernardo and Laraia, followed by a booted grounder by the Wesley second baseman loaded the bases for Henry. The veteran worked out a walk to add to the Cavalier lead at 5-0. A two RBI double from sophomore Earl Kochel IV highlighted the remainder of the inning.
Cabrini would go on to add three more runs in the bottom of the sixth and coast to the 13-0 final.
Wesley's Joey Strazza was saddled with the loss after allowing eight runs (seven earned) in 2.1 innings of work.
Game 2
The offense picked up where is left on in game as the hosts used a seven run sixth inning to storm back and seal the come-from-behind victory.
McKisson and freshman
Jon Sepe led the offense with three hits each, while Sepe also added four RBIs. Strickland helped cap the Cavs' comeback as the backstop uncorked a grand slam for his second homerun of the day. Laraia and Kochel chipped in one RBI each.
On the bump, senior
Mike Valerio earned the start and allowed six runs on seven hits in 3.1 innings. He struck out five. Classmate Nick Gares would ultimately earn the victory after he allowed a pair of runs in two innings of relief, while freshman
Brandon Harris collected his first save of the season. The newcomer tossed two hitless innings and struck out two.
The Blue and White would take the early 1-0 lead thanks to a double through the left side by Sepe. The lead would not stand for long, however as Wesley quickly evened the score in the top of the third.
The visitors would put up a crooked frame in the top of the fourth as they pushed across five runs, highlighted by a two RBI double off the bat of Dustin Sutton.
Cabrini would get a run back in the fourth and fifth to trim their deficit to 6-3, but Wesley again answered thanks to an RBI groundout form Jason Boc.
Trailing 7-3 to start the bottom of the sixth, the Cavs would storm back to take the eventual 10-7 lead after scoring seven runs on five hits and sending 12 men to the plate. As mentioned, Strickland delivered the clutch hit with a grand slam to even the score at seven all. Five batters later, Sepe nearly cleared the bases again with a sharp single to right side to put the Cavs up 9-7. An infield RBI single to second from Laraia would eventually cap the scoring in the inning.
The two teams would trade runs in the seventh and eighth innings for the eventual 11-8 final.
Wesley's Ben Dawson would collect the loss after surrendering eight runs in two innings.
Following today's double dip the Cavaliers improve to 2-2 on the young season. They will look to stay hot when they next travel to Rowan University on Thursday, March 18th. First pitch is slated for 3:30pm.
