Softball Sweeps Gwynedd Mercy in Home Opener

RADNOR, PA – The Cabrini softball team carried the momentum from Friday's wins back to Cabrini field, as the Cavaliers improved to 4-0 on the season with two more wins over Gwynedd Mercy today.

This marks the first time the Blue and White has won its first four conference games since going 10-0 to open league play in 2016.

Game 1: Cabrini 9, Gwynedd Mercy 5
The Cavaliers grabbed an early lead, as sophomore Kaitlyn Martin's single up the middle scored freshman Madison Gugel. The Griffins responded win the second on sophomore Maddy McBride's two run homer.

The visitor's lead was short-lived, as senior Carolyn Alcantara blasted her first career home run over the left field fence to open the bottom of the second inning. Cabrini regained the lead later in the frame, as Gugel's single plated junior Angel Cintron.

Gwynedd Mercy freshman Jocelyn Baumeister wasted little time evening the score in the third, opening the inning with a solo blast. The score remained 3-3 until the bottom of the fourth, when the Cavaliers pulled away.

The first eight batters in the bottom of the fourth reached base, as the Blue and White tallied six runs on five hits, including a Cintron RBI double, a Gugel RBI single and two RBI singles by sophomore Emily Wargo and Alcantara.

The Griffins looked to make another comeback in the fifth, as Baumeister popped her second homer of the game, a two run blast to pull the visitors to within 9-5, but Gwynedd Mercy would get no further.

The trio of Alcantara, Cintron and Gugel posted three hits each, one more than Martin and freshman Emma Barbera. Fellow rookie Avery Byrnes collected her second win after allowing two earned runs on four hits in four innings of relief.

Game 2: Cabrini 9, Gwynedd Mercy 0
The Griffins threatened in the top of the first, but sophomore Kadirah Williams threw a runner out at the plate to end the inning. The Cavaliers carried the excitement into their first at bat and it paid dividends.

After leading off with a single and advancing on a sacrifice bunt, Cintron crossed the plate on a Gugel double. The rookie then scored on the next at bat, a Martin double.

That was all the offense junior Casey Scheuren would need, as the sophomore just five hits over five innings with a pair of punchouts.

While Scheuren kept the Griffins' bats quiet, the Cabrini offense continued to hum. In the second, Cintron drove in a pair of runs before scoring on a Gwynedd Mercy infield error. The home team added another run in the fourth, as Cintron's ground pout scored Williams, extending the lead to 6-0.

Cabrini put the game out of reach in the bottom of the fourth. Three consecutive one out singles loaded the bases before Martin scored on a wild pitch. Aggressive base running then allowed Alcantara and sophomore Allison Martin to score on a Wargo sacrifice fly.

Cintron and Kaitlyn Martin recorded two base knocks each, with Cintron driving in three runs and scoring twice.

The Cavaliers will have a few days to enjoy the wins before returning to action on Thursday, when they will play host to Immaculata (0-3, 0-3 Atlantic East). First pitch of the Atlantic East Conference doubleheader is slated for 3pm.
