RADNOR, PA – The Cabrini men's soccer team celebrated the careers of its three seniors tonight, as the Cavaliers scored a 2-1 victory over Wesley College at Edith Robb Dixon Field.
The game marked the Blue and White's first of two games to be played this spring and the team's first game competition in 506 days.
Prior to tonight's match, the Cavaliers honored their three seniors,
Conlin Groft,
Brahk Morrison and
Anthony Zampirri. These young men have helped the Blue and White secure 33 wins during their careers, including three consecutive conference championship games and the 2017 CSAC championship.
The Cavaliers were put on the defensive in the first half, as Wesley outshot the home side 8-3, but of the combined 11 first half shots, only one forced a goaltender save.
Ten minutes into the second half, the Blue and White found its way through the Wolverines' defense, as freshman
Nick LoBiondo found sophomore
Ben Cahill for the game's first goal.
The Cavaliers again knocked on the door just three minutes later, but sophomore
Tyler Tomlin's shot attempt found the post.
Cabrini doubled its lead in the 66th minute, as junior
Dakota Bauer's service found classmate
Josh Cunningham.
Wesley climbed back into the game in the 76th frame on Andrew Schnaack's goal.
With time winding down, it was the Cabrini defense that held on for the win. Wesley pressed Zampirri into action over the game's final minutes, as the senior goaltender recorded two of his five saves in the final four minutes, including one in the final seconds.
The Cavaliers found themselves on the short end of a 21-10 discrepancy in shots and fought off five corner locks, including two in the game's final minutes.
Junior
Nick Booth led the Cavaliers with three shots, one more than Cunningham.
Mel Hays tallied six shots for the Wolverines (1-2), while junior goaltender Jason Sommer notched a pair of saves in the loss.
The Cavaliers will close their shortened spring campaign on April 17, when they visit Immaculata University. Kickoff is slated for 1pm.
