RADNOR, PA - The Cabrini softball team celebrated the careers of its four seniors with a pair of wins over Marywood today at Cabrini Field. With the wins, the Blue and White improved to 11-1 in the Atlantic East Conference and overall.
Between games, the Cavaliers held a ceremony to honor
Carolyn Alcantara,
Angel Cintron,
Casey Scheuren and
Amber Seamen, the team's four seniors. As a group, these ladies have led Cabrini to 61 victories, including a 34-10 mark in conference play, with 250 hits and 136 RBI over their 286 combined games.
Game 1: Cabrini 5, Marywood 0
Freshman
Avery Byrnes took care of the Marywood (3-3, 1-3 Atlantic East) offense from her spot in the pitcher's circle, as the rookie tossed a gem. Byrnes allowed just one hit over six innings with six strikeouts to improve to 6-0 on the season.    Â
While Byrnes kept the Pacers off the base path, it took a few innings for the Cavaliers offense to find its rhythm. Cabrini struck in the third inning, as Alcantara opened the frame before advancing to second on a Byrnes sacrifice bunt. The senior then scored the eventual game-winning run on a single up the middle by freshman
Madison Gugel.
The Pacers tried to get the run back in the top of the fourth, as a one out walk and double put two in scoring position, but Byrnes secured a big strike out and forced a ground out to end the threat.
Byrnes helped her cause in the fourth, as her two out, two RBI single plated sophomores
Kaitlyn Martin and
Allison Martin, extending Cabrini's lead to 3-0.
The Cavaliers mounted another two out rally in the fifth, as sophomore
Emily Wargo's single to right center drove the Martins home for a 5-0 lead.
The Martin sisters led the Cabrini offense with matching stat lines, going 2-3 with two runs scored. Gugel matched their two hits.
Game 2: Cabrini 9, Marywood 5
The Cavaliers started the game with another two out rally, as Seamen drew a two out free pass before reaching third on a
Kaitlyn Martin double. Both Cavaliers then crossed the plate on
Allison Martin's RBI single, giving Cabrini an early 2-0 lead.
They home squad held the lead until the fifth inning, when a pair of errors cost the Cavaliers. Trailing 2-1, the Pacers got runners on first and second with one out. Despite recording a out on a fielder's choice, a throwing error allowed the Marywood runners to advance to second and third with two outs. One batter later, all three runners crossed the plate, as a second Cabrini error sent the Cavaliers into a 4-2 hole.
The deficit didn't last long, as Cabrini rallied in the bottom of the frame. The first six Cavaliers to step into the batter's box reached base safely, with
Kaitlyn Martin,
Allison Martin and Wargo driving in four runs. Cabrini added another run later in the inning, as freshman
Emma Barbera's single to right plated Wargo to give the home team a 7-4 lead.
Byrnes came in from the bullpen in relief looking to hold on to the lead, but the first batter she faced deposited the ball into the trees beyond the left field fence. The next two Pacers also reached base, but a pair of fielder's choices and fly ball ended the ended.
The Blue and White added a pair of two out insurance run sin the sixth as singles by Scheuren and Wargo scored Kaitlyn and
Allison Martin.
That was more than enough for Byrnes who set the Pacers down 1-2-3 in the top of the seventh for her third save of the season.
The trio of Martin, Martin and Wargo combined to go 9-12 with five RBI and six runs scored in the victory, while Gugel added two more hits. Scheuren improved to 2-0 in the pitcher's circle after allowing three earned runs on seven hits over five innings.
The Cavaliers will head south next weekend, as they pay a visit to Dover, DE to face Wesley College (9-5, 6-1 Atlantic East) in an Atlantic East Conference doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 3pm on Friday.
