DOVER, DE - The Cabrini baseball team split today's double header against the Wesley College Wolverines as they lost game one by a narrow 7-6 final, but took a convincing 12-1 victory in game two to ultimately win the series.
Game One: Wesley 7, Cabrini 6
The hosting Wolverines received a big performance on the bump from starting pitcher Cole Davis in the day's opening game. The junior tossed a complete game en route to his second victory of the season, while notching 10 strikeouts. He scattered 10 hits and surrendered six runs (four earned).
Davis was opposed by freshman
Brandon Harris who, staked to an early 2-0 lead thanks to RBIs from seniors
Brendan Van Belle and
Mack McKisson, cruised through his first two innings, retiring the first eight batters he faced. Wesley would mount a two out rally, however as they would push across four runs in the inning to take the lead and chase Harris in the process. Harris gave way to senior
Joey Moyer who would eventually induce a weak grounder to end the threat.
Wesley would tack on three more runs in the bottom of the fourth to extend their lead to 7-2. The score would hold steady through the fifth, until the Cavaliers mounted a late comeback attempt. An RBI single from sophomore Earl Kockel IV, followed by some heads up base running from senior
Sean Bernardo trimmed the host's lead 7-4.
The Blue and White would go on to plate a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh after loaded the bases, but the aforementioned Davis tallied his two biggest strikeouts of the game on back-to-back batters to halt the Cavs comeback and preserve the 7-6 victory for Wesley.
Game Two: Cabrini 12, Wesley 1
The backend of the day's double dip was highlighted by senior
Mike Valerio's first win the season. The veteran tossed a masterful eight innings as he needed just 74 pitches to record 24 outs and allowed three hits and one run, while striking out six.
Junior
Garrett Laraia paced the offense with a pair of hits, including his first home run of the season and four RBIs. He added his first stolen base of the year as well. Senior
Gilbert Peralta also went yard, bringing his season total to four, while driving in a pair of runs. Sophomore
Christian Strickland, along with seniors
Mack McKisson and
Steven Priest tallied two hits a piece.
Game two had the early makings of a pitchers dual as both offenses were kept quiet through the first five frames, until the Cavaliers broke through with a four run sixth inning. Peralta's aforementioned home run highlighted the inning with Bernando and Laraia adding an RBI each.
A six run seventh inning busted the game open in favor of the Blue and White as the Cavs stormed to a 10-1 lead. As mentioned, Laraia delivered the big blow with a three run homer to cap the scoring in the inning. Cabrini would go on to add one more run in the top of the eighth thanks to an RBI single from Kochel.
Following today's games, the Cavaliers improve to 8-5 overall and 6-1 in Atlantic East Conference play. They will look to add to their win total on Tuesday, April 20th when they travel to Immaculata, PA for a key nine inning matchup against the conference leading Mighty Macs. First pitch is slated for 3pm.
