RADNOR, PA – The Cabrini men's lacrosse team saw its six game win streak come to a close tonight, as the No. 6 Cavaliers suffered a 23-9 loss to Division I University of Pennsylvania at Edith Robb Dixon Field.
The Quakers notched a pair of early goals before the Cavaliers settled into the game. Senior
Mike Gerzabek put Cabrini on the board midway through the first quarter, converting a pass from classmate
Eric Carr.
Penn responded with a man-up goal late in the period, but senior
Matt LoParo 45 seconds later with an unassisted marker, as the Cavaliers trailed 3-2 after 15 minutes of action.
The visitors opened the second period with an early tally, but again the Blue and White had a response just seconds later, with Gerzabek scoring a man-up marker.
Penn extended its lead to 6-3 at the 11:44 mark of the second quarter, but the home team would not go away. LoParo and junior
Kyle Tucker added unassisted goals to pull the Cavaliers to within 6-5 with 5:24 left in the first half.
Then the Quakers took over. The visitors closed the half with five unanswered goals to build an 11-5 lead at the half. Their scoring run continued into the third quarter, as Penn pushed its lead to 15-5 before goals by LoParo and Gerzabek put a stop to the Quakers' run.
Penn used a dominant run at the faceoff spot to key its second and third quarter scoring run, as the visitors won 18-23 draws during the 30 minute span. The Quakers also secured 43 ground balls to just 25 for the Cavaliers.
Gerzabek led the Blue and White with four goals, one more than LoParo, while classmate
Jake Klein handed out three assists.
Defensively, the Blue and White pressured the Quakers into 15 turnovers, with senior
Tommy DeLuca causing four, two more than Carr and classmate
Bobby Cressman.
Senior Adam Goldner led the Quakers (1-0) with nine goals, while junior Dylan Gergar paired seven goals and two dimes.
The Cavaliers (8-2) have some time to reflect on tonight's result before returning to action on Wednesday May 5, when they host an Atlantic East Conference semifinal round game.
