ASTON, PA – The Cabrini softball team put a cap on its regular season today, as the Cavaliers split a doubleheader at Neumann. Today's results, an 8-3 victory and 1-0 loss closed the Blue and White's regular season with a 14-6 record.
With its regular season now complete, Cabrini must wait until the completion of other regular season conference games next week to learn its schedule for the upcoming Atlantic East Conference tournament.
Game 1: Cabrini 8, Neumann 3
The Cavaliers jumped to an early lead in the opener, as junior
Angel Cintron and freshman
Madison Gugel reached with singles, before scoring on a single by sophomore
Allison Martin. The sophomore then crossed the plate on a single by today's starting pitcher, junior
Casey Scheuren.
Cabrini added to its lead in the second, as sophomore
Kaitlyn Martin drove in freshman
Samantha Taddei.
The Blue and White added to its lead in the third, as Scheuren opened the frame with a triple, scoring on a double by freshman
Kelsey Huling. Following a Neumann error, Taddei's single plated Huling. Later in the inning, the Cavaliers extended their lead to 7-1, as a Gugel sacrifice fly scored freshman
Emma Barbera.
The Knights got a run back in the bottom of the fifth, but Cabrini pushed its lead back to 8-2 in the top of the sixth on back to back doubles by
Kaitlyn Martin and classmate
Emily Wargo.
Scheuren improved to 3-0 in the pitcher's circle after allowing just two earned runs on seven hits in 7.0 innings. The junior also helped her cause at the plate, joining Wargo and Taddei with two base hits
Game 2: Neumann 1, Cabrini 0
Neumann's J Sardi and Cabrini's
Grace Stairiker held court in the nightcap, as the game's starting pitchers combined to surrender just seven hits and one run.
Through the middle of the sixth inning, only one player reached third and only one time did multiple players reach base. Both happened in the bottom of the second, as Neumann had runners on first and third with two outs, but a routine fly ball ended the threat.
The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the sixth, when the Knights used a pair of ground outs to make a leadoff double pay dividends.
Cabrini looked to make a late comeback in the top of the seventh, as
Kaitlyn Martin reached base on a Neumann miscue, but the Cavaliers failed to get the ball out of the infield, standing a runner at the end of the game.
Cintron and sophomore
Kadirah Williams accounted for the Blue and White's two hits in the loss, while Stairiker was the hard-luck loser after surrendering one run on five hits in the complete game.
