RADNOR, PA – The Cabrini softball team stands one victory away from making its first appearance in the Atlantic East Conference championship, after the Cavaliers scored a pair of wins on the first day of the conference tournament.
The Blue and White scored a thrilling walk-off 5-3 win over Gwynedd Mercy in the opener before erupting for a nine run inning in an 11-0 victory over Marywood.
After today's wins, the Cavaliers (16-6) will face Marywood tomorrow at 12pm. A victory would send Cabrini to next weekend's championship series, while a loss would force a second winner-take-all game against the Pacers at 2pm.
Game 1: Cabrini 5, Gwynedd Mercy 3
The Griffins grabbed an early lead, as senior Emily Shaheen clubbed a two-run homer in the top of the first inning. The Cavaliers evened the score in the bottom of the second, as junior
Casey Scheuren's two run blast over the left field fence plated sophomore
Allison Martin and evened the score at 2-2.
Cabrini grabbed its first lead of the day one inning later, as freshman
Madison Gugel reached on a Gwynedd Mercy error before stealing second and advancing to third on the second error of the frame. The rookie crossed the plate one batter later on sophomore
Kaitlyn Martin's ground out.
The Griffins leveled the score at 3-3 in the fourth opening the inning with back to back singles before senior Chelsea Briggs' ground out scored freshman Madison Condurso.
Despite both teams getting runners on base in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, the game remained deadlocked until the seventh inning.
Scheuren, who entered the pitcher's circle in relief in the second inning shut down the Griffins 1-2-3 in the top of the seventh, giving Cabrini to earn a thrilling victory.
Junior
Angel Cintron opened the inning with a walk before stealing second. After two outs, sophomore
Emily Wargo walked to the plate and put an exclamation point on the game with a shot into the trees beyond the left field fence for a walk-off two run homer, her third of the season.
Wargo claimed two of Cabrini's six hits in the win, while Scheuren improved to 4-0 in the circle after allowing one earned run over six innings with a season high seven strikeouts.
Game 2: Marywood 3, Gwynedd Mercy 2
As in the opener, the Griffins (4-18) grabbed an early 2-0 advantage. The club recorded three consecutive singles to open the bottom of the first before freshmen Ashley Focht and Grace Scally drove in runs.
The game then turned into a pitcher's duel, as Focht and Marywood's Mara Hamm went pitch for pitch, combining to allow just four hits over the next five innings.
The Pacers finally broke through in the top of the seventh. Freshman Rae Hatala's single put the Pacers on the board, plating pinch runner Katie Epler. Later in the inning, with the bases loaded, the Griffins could not convert a fielder's choice, allowing Sarah Sharp to score, evening the score at 2-2. One batter later, Marywood scored the eventual game-winner, as junior Annie Heyen's ground out drove in freshman Emily Rose.
The Griffins looked to keep the game and their season alive in the bottom of the seventh, but stranded a pair of runners to close the game.
Game 3: Cabrini 11, Marywood 0
After a scoreless first inning, the Cavaliers jumped ahead in the second. Wargo opened the inning with a single before advancing to third on an
Allison Martin double. Two batters later, the sophomore crossed the plate on a ground out by freshman
Emma Barbera.
Cabrini doubled its lead in the third. Following a Cintron triple, Gugel's single put the Blue and White ahead 2-0.
Those two runs proved to be more than enough for freshman
Avery Byrnes, who held the Pacers to just three hits over five innings with four strikeouts, as she improved to 8-2 on the season.
While Byrnes kept the Pacers off-balance, the Cavaliers found their high powered offense in the top of the fourth inning, as they blew the game open with a nine run outburst.
Allison Martin and Scheuren singled before freshman
Kelsey Huling cleared the bases with a three run shot over the wall for her first career home run.
Sophomore
Kadirah Williams and Cintron singled before Gugel,
Kaitlyn Martin and Wargo drove in runs, expanding the lead to 8-0. Following a single by
Allison Martin, Scheuren's double scored two before the junior crossed the plate on a single down the right field line by sophomore
Grace Stairiker.
Byrnes then shut the door on the Pacers, allowing just one base runner over the game's final two innings.
Ten players accounted for Cabrini's 16 hits in the victory, with
Allison Martin going 3-3 with a pair of runs scored. Cintron, Gugel, Wargo and Scheuren added two base knocks apiece, while Huling tallied three RBI.
