RADNOR, PA - The Cabrini women's lacrosse team secured its place in Saturday's Atlantic East Conference championship game tonight, as it rolled past the visiting Gwynedd Mercy Griffins 23-6 at Edith Robb Dixon Field.
With their seventh consecutive victory, the tournament's top seed Cavaliers (7-2) will make their ninth straight appearance on Championship Saturday, when they play host to number two seed Marymount at a time yet to be announced.
The Cavaliers were focused from the opening whistle tonight, as sophomore
Shea Neary found classmate
Olivia Little for the game's first goal just 64 seconds after the opening whistle. One minute later, junior
Taylor Dimmerling notched the first of her five goals on the night. Sophomore
Dana Carlson got on the board at the 27 minute mark to build a 3-0 lead and the Blue and White never looked back.
Cabrini notched the first 10 goals of the contest and led 14-1 at the half after outshooting the visitors 29-1.
The Cavaliers got offensive contributions from up and down the line-up tonight, as 12 players recorded at least one point. Dimmerling led the way with five goals and two assists, while Little and Carlson added four goals and two dimes apiece.
Neary joined freshmen
Olivia Pace and
Victoria Zielke with two goals, while reserve goaltender
Abbey Fenton notched an assist.
Much of the Cavaliers' offensive control came from their success in the draw circle, where they won 23 of the 28 chances, with Neary and Little combining for 17 draw controls.
While the Blue and White attack was humming, its defense never allowed the Griffins to find any rhythm, holding them to just seven shots and pressuring them into 7-14 in clear attempts and 15 turnovers. Junior
Ashley Tutzauer caused three turnovers, one more than Zielke and classmate
Caroline Gallagher.
Graduate student Victoria Mollitor led the Griffins (4-4) with three goals, while sophomore goaltender Reilly Owens added six saves and three caused turnovers.
In today's other tournament semifinal game, the Saints (7-2) scored a hard fought 16-8 win over Marywood. With the game tied a 5-5, Marymount scored a string of six unanswered goals in a 12 minute span between the first and second halves to build an insurmountable 11-5 advantage.
Sarah Agrillo led the Saints with six goals and two dimes, while Emily Peters added four markers. Caitlyn Dunn anchored the defensive effort with four caused turnovers and six ground balls, while goaltender Mariel Russ made seven saves.
Saturday's game will mark the second time Cabrini and Marymount have met this season. The Cavaliers scored a 21-15 victory in Arlington on April 7, the last time the Saints saw defeat.
After leading 8-4 midway through the first half, the Saints battled back to take a 9-8 lead with 6:41 left in the opening stanza. Over the next 14 minutes, spanning the first and second halves, the Cavaliers tallied six straight goals to take a commanding 14-9 lead.
Freshman
Olivia Pace led the Cabrini offense with a season best five goals, while Carlson recorded a game-high six points on four goals and two assists. Little matched Carlson with four goals to go with 11 draw controls and four ground balls.
Sophomore netminder
Sam Hamalak was called on for three saves, while Tutzauer added two caused turnovers and two ground balls to the defensive effort.
Kaleigh Dunham led the Saints with five goals and an assist, while a trio of Saints added two goals each. Russ tallied eight saves in the loss.
