RADNOR, PA – It took the No. 5 Cavaliers just a few seconds to grab a lead, but it would be the team's only lead of the day, as the Cabrini men's lacrosse team suffered a season-ending 16-5 loss to Salisbury in the second round of the NCAA Tournament at Edith Robb Dixon Field.
The loss ends the Blue and White's season with an 11-3 mark, a season that included a perfect 6-0 record in Atlantic East Conference that extended its NCAA-record conference win streak to 127 and the program's 20th consecutive conference championship.
Sophomore faceoff specialist
Jake Huey won the opening draw and sprinted to the goal and beating the Sea Gulls' senior goaltender TJ Ellis for the game's first tally just seconds after the opening whistle.
The advantage did not last long, as Salisbury took advantage of two early Cabrini penalties to score man-up goals. The Sea Gulls rattled off six unanswered goals to take a commanding 6-1 lead after 15 minutes of action.
Senior
Matt LoParo connected with classmate
Mike Gerzabek for a marker two minutes into the second quarter, but back to back Salisbury tallies regained the momentum and helped the Sea Gulls' establish a 9-2 lead at the half.
While the first half stat sheet looked remarkably balanced between the two teams, Salisbury's 21 shots included 17 attempts on target, while the Cavaliers forced Ellis into action non just three of their 18 first half attempts.
Salisbury pulled away in a third quarter that saw it double the Cavaliers in shots 14-7 and win five of the seven faceoffs, as it extended its lead to 14-3.
Freshman
Max Drift led the Cavaliers with two goals, while Huey, Gerzabek and LoParo also notched the scoring column. Huey also went 12-22 at the faceoff spot, scooping a team high six ground balls, two more than senior
Tommy DeLuca.
Freshman goaltender
Rob Pensabene posted eight saves in his first career loss, while classmate
Brendan King added five stops in 24 minutes of relief.
Senior Jarrett Bronwell scored seven goals to lead Salisbury (15-1) to its 15th consecutive victory, while classmates Cross Ferrara and Josh Melton added three assists each. Fellow senior Brett Malamphy went 11-17 at the faceoff spot with seven ground balls, while Ellis recorded five saves.
