RADNOR, PA – The Cavaliers nearly erased a 15 point second half deficit, but in the end, it proved to be too much as the Cabrini men's basketball team fell to the visiting Gwynedd Mercy Griffins 65-61 tonight inside Nerney Field House.
Sophomore
Aquil Stewart led the Blue and White with 18 points, while senior
Ryan Byars added 11 points, five rebounds and five steals. Classmate
Brice Parks chipped in with 10 points, five boards and three dimes.
The Cavaliers got off to a slow start, as Gwynedd used a 12-2 spurt to build a 20-8 lead midway through the opening stanza. The deficit stood at 26-15 when Cabrini made its comeback.
Over the next four minutes, the Blue and White turned up its defense and went on a 17-4 run, with five players accounting for the points. Parks capped the spurt with an offensive board and lay-in to give Cabrini a 32-30 lead with 1:39 left in the first half.
The teams headed into the halftime break tied at 32-32.
The Blue and White, again, started slowly in the second half, and Gwynedd Mercy took full advantage. The visitors scored the first nine points of the stanza and pushed their lead to a game-high 51-36 on Ty Jones' three at the 12:28 mark.
Again, Cabrini would not go away. The home side slowly chipped away at its deficit, before Stewart and sophomore
Milton Robinson drained threes on three consecutive trips to pull the Cavaliers to within 56-45 with 5:50 to play.
The Cavaliers' deficit swung between 2-5 points over the game's final minutes, but Cabrini could not overcome the Griffins securing five of their 10 offensive rebounds in the final 5:28.
Jones led the Griffins with 19 points and eight rebounds, while fellow graduate student Donaven Spencer paired 15 points, and nine boards.
Cabrini will hit the road on Wednesday, as they travel to Hackettstown, NJ to face Centenary. Game time is set for 8pm.
