UNION, N.J. – A 14-0 run by Kean over the final 4:36 of the second quarter proved to be the difference as the Cougars (1-1) handed Cabrini (0-1) a loss in its season opener, 65-52 Saturday afternoon in the Garden State.
Cabrini got 12 points from freshman guard Emma Brown, while junior forward Kai Williams scored ten off the bench with senior guard Miranda Liebtag scoring eight. Brown also added in a team-high eight rebounds with Liebtag and Brown each getting five.
Shannon McCoy scored 19 for Kean, with Brittany Graff getting 14.
The first quarter saw Kean grab an early 12-7 lead, before Cabrini responded with a 6-0 run to end the quarter, punctuated by a jumper from freshman guard Ella Gordon with 51 seconds left in the quarter for a 13-12 lead. The lead ballooned to five at 20-15 when Leibtag scored on a three-point play with 4:36 left in the half.
Kean jumped out to a 34-22 lead in the third quarter, going up by as much as 17 with 1:28 left in the quarter.
Cabrini got no closer than 13 the rest of the way, as freshman guard Emma Pyne hit a three-pointer with 56 seconds left in the game for a 63-50 deficit.
Cabrini heads to Eastern on Tuesday for The Battle For Eagle Road.
