Byars' game winner propels Cavaliers over Bulldogs

RADNOR, Pa. – With less than a minute remaining in regulation and no timeouts left, Ryan Byars capped off a 7-0 Cabrini run with the game-winning layup as the Cavaliers topped the Brooklyn College Bulldogs 56-55 Saturday afternoon at Nerney Field House.

With 1:41 left in regulation, the Cavaliers faced a six-point deficit, but Christian Lane's first made 3-pointer of the day made it a one possession game and after Lane's triple, Byars connected on a fast break layup to make it one-point game. With 17 seconds left, Ahmadu Sarnor rebounded a missed Brooklyn College free throw, sending the ball up court to Aquil Stewart as he found Byars on the left edge who drove past his defender and sank a reverse layup sending the Cavs bench and Nerney Field House into a frenzy.

Cabrini got out of the gate slowly as the Bulldogs took an early 5-0 lead by the 17:53 mark. The Cavaliers (2-3) quickly tied it on a Sarnor 3-pointer with 16:03 left to play in the first. By the 10:00 mark, freshman Emanuel Mosely drove the paint for a layup to give Cabrini a 15-13 edge as the Cavs did not relinquish the lead for the remainder of the first half and took a 34-29 advantage into the break.

The Cavaliers opened the second half with a 6-0 run and took a 40-29 lead over the Bulldogs (1-4) with 17:50 remaining. Over the next 7:00, the Bulldogs went on an 18-2 run and took a 47-42 lead with 10:46 left. At the 1:41 mark, Brooklyn capitalized on a Cabrini turnover as a Bulldogs layup made it a six-point game, but less than a minute later, Lane's three-pointer makes it a one-possession game, setting up Byars' late-game heroics.

Sarnor led all scorers on the night as the sophomore put up 22 points with 17 coming in the first half alone. Byars scored all eight of his points in the second half, going 4-for-5 from the field.

The Cabrini men's basketball team will be back on the hardwood on Tuesday, Nov. 22 as the Cavaliers head down the road to Rosemont College. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m.
