BRYN MAWR, Pa. – Sophomore
Aquil Stewart put up a season high 25 points, but the Cabrini University men's basketball team fell to crosstown rival Rosemont College 84-80 on the road Tuesday night at Alumnae Gymnasium.
The start of the first half was a back-and-forth affair, but Cabrini began to pull away at the 11:41 mark as Stewart completed a 3-point play and the Cavaliers (2-4) took a 17-12 lead. Five minutes later, the Ravens (2-3) knotted the game at 23 apiece after a Damien Rawls layup. Over the final 5:00 of the first half, Cabrini and Rosemont traded scoring runs as the Cavs went on a 9-0 run from the 4:27 mark to the 2:41 and then the Ravens closed out the first on a 14-4 run to take a 41-40 lead into the break.
In the second half, the Cavs regained their lead as Cabrini led 57-53 with 13:50 left in regulation, but Rosemont quickly stormed back and took a 76-64 lead with 5:29 remaining after a 19-11 run beginning at the 12:43 mark. In the final seconds of action, Stewart gave Cabrini life by sinking three straight free throws after he was fouled on a 3-point attempt, making it a four-point deficit. A Ravens technical foul then brought Stewart back to the line for two more, but after only hitting one, it remained a two-possession game as time expired.
Sophomore
Ahmadu Sarnor put up 22 points, his third game with 20 or more points this season.
Ryan Byars joined Sarnor and Stewart in double figures as the senior scored 13.
Cabrini enjoys a long lay-off for the holidays as the Cavaliers do not return to the floor until Wednesday, Nov. 30 when they take on Moravian College in Nerney Field House in a non-conference matchup. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
