CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Cabrini University women's basketball team dropped its first game of the 2022 David Wells Classic as the Cavaliers fell to Pomona-Pitzer 67-57 at Roberts Pavilion Friday night.
The Cavaliers (2-4) got out to a 5-0 lead to begin the contest and quickly extended the lead to 10-4 after a
Kai Williams layup. The Cavs finished the first quarter of action on a short 6-3 run and took a 16-13 lead into the second quarter. The Cavs and Saghens went back-and-forth in the second quarter, but Pomona-Pitzer knotted the game at 24 apiece with 4:37 left before the end of the half and eventually took a 29-26 lead into the break.
After the intermission, the Sagehens stormed out to a 15-point lead with an 11-2 run and took a 43-28 edge with 5:04 left in the quarter. Over the next 5:00, the Cavs closed the gap and got within single digits but continued to trail the Sagehens 48-40 at the end of three quarters of play. In the fourth, an
Abby Paolini layup got the Cavs within one, 48-47 with 7:31 left in regulation, but five straight points for Pomona-Pitzer squashed the Cabrini comeback as the Sagehens kept it a two-possession game for the remainder of the contest.
Ella Gordon led all Cabrini scorers on the night as the freshman put up a season-high 18 points, going 3-for-5 from beyond the arc and 6-for-9 overall from the field.
Miranda Liebtag also finished in double figures with 12 points while
Katie Rodriguez recorded her first double-double of the year with 12 points and 12 boards.
The Cavaliers will be back on the floor on Saturday, Nov. 26 as they take on the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Athenas in their second game of the David Wells Classic. Tip-off is set for 6:30 p.m. PST.
