CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Cabrini University women's basketball team fell to the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Athenas 74-58 Saturday night in the final game of the 2022 David Wells Classic.
At the start of the first quarter, the Cavaliers (2-5) fell behind 4-0, but freshman
Ella Gordon hit a 3-ball to get the Cavs within one. The Athenas (2-3) took a 17-12 lead with 1:28 left in the quarter but Cabrini closed the gap and made it a two-point deficit, 20-18. In the second, CMS extended their lead further, going on a 13-5 run to take a 45-32 lead into the break. The Athenas outscored Cabrini 25-14 in the second quarter.
In the third, the Cavs cut into the CMS lead and after a
Kai Williams layup, Cabrini made it a three-possession game with 5:08 left in the quarter. In the fourth, the Cavs outscored CMS 13-12 but could not overcome the double digit Athenas lead.
Senior
Miranda Liebtag led all Cabrini scorers with 18 points and finished two rebounds shy of a double-double with eight.
Brielle Fitzpatrick finished with nine points, going 5-for-6 from the charity stripe.
Cabrini looks ahead to a week off from competition as the Cavaliers do not return to action until Monday, Dec. 5 when they take on Haverford College at home. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
