Game Recap: Basketball (Men) | | Mark Weaver

Second half surge propels Cavaliers to season-opening victory

RADNOR, Pa. – Ahmadu Sarnor dropped a career-high 23 points in his Cavaliers debut as the Cabrini men's basketball team topped Rutgers-Camden 72-63 Wednesday night in its season opener inside Nerney Field House.

Cabrini had a less than impressive first half as the Cavaliers (1-0) went 1-for-15 from beyond the arc and 7-for-27 overall from the field. The Cavs shot 50% from the stripe, keeping them in the contest as the Scarlet Raptors (0-1) led 28-20 going into the break. Sarnor led Cabrini with only six points in the first half.

After the break, Cabrini slowly chipped away at the Rutgers-Camden lead. At the 10:12 mark, after a wild sequence of turnovers and a loose ball, the Cavaliers gained possession as Aquil Stewart made a behind-the-back pass to Donoven Mack to knot the game at 42 apiece. The Raptors regained the lead for three minutes, but with 7:13 left to play, Patrick Campbell put Cabrini up 49-48 with a layup, giving the Cavs their first lead since the 13:36 mark in the first half. After Cabrini took the lead, Sarnor made back-to-back triples to put the Cavaliers up 55-48, electrifying the bench and all but sealing the Cavaliers victory.

Cabrini outscored Rutgers-Camden 52-35 in the second half as Sarnor put up 17 points, going 4-for-4 from long range. As a team, the Cavaliers went 6-for-7 from beyond the arc and shot 57% overall from the field in the second half. Donoven Mack and Aquil Stewart each put up 10 and 15, respectively, joining Sarnor in double figures.

Cabrini will be back on the hardwood on Saturday, Nov. 12 as the Cavaliers travel across town to Arcadia University take on the Knights in a non-conference bout. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
