NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Cabrini University field hockey team saw its run in the NCAA tournament come to an end on Wednesday, as the Cavs (14-5) dropped a 3-1 decision to 16th-ranked Christopher Newport (15-5) in the first round.
Cabrini had knotted the game at 1-all at halftime as junior midfielder Caroline Gallagher scored the Cavs' lone goal with 2:19 left in the first quarter.
Three different players scored for the Captains, including what turned out to be the game-winning goal from Marcella Sabbagh on a penalty stroke just 53 seconds into the third quarter.
CNU took an early 1-0 lead when Maddison Steele scored on a pass from Delaney Norr 9:40 into the contest.
The final goal came 8:14 before the end of the contest when Katie Abendschoen scored for the final 3-1 margin.
Sophomore goalkeeper Courtney Keith kept the Cavs in it, making 14 saves on the day.
