Cavaliers fall to No. 7 CNU in hard-fought battle

Newport News, Va. – The Cabrini University men's basketball team fell to No. 7-ranked Christopher Newport University 76-55 Thursday night at the Freeman Center in the second game of the 2022 CNU Captains Shootout.

Cabrini entered the contest coming off an 86-60 routing of Goucher College back on Dec. 19. Thursday night's affair did not go the way of the Cavaliers (4-7) despite holding their own in the first half. At the 10:55 mark, Aquil Stewart knotted the game at 11 apiece with a jumper and after falling behind 20-13 with 6:17 left, Patrick Campbell knocked down a triple to make it a 20-16 deficit. For the remainder of the half, the Cavs and Captains (12-2) traded baskets, but CNU held a 32-26 lead at the break.

After the break, Cabrini managed to keep within single digits for the first four minutes of the second half as a Malik Bailey free throw made it a 40-35 deficit with 15:53 remaining. Over the next six minutes, the Captains went on a 15-4 run and took a commanding 55-39 lead with 10:06 left in the half. At the 7:14 mark, a 3-pointer from Ahmadu Sarnor put the Cavaliers within 12, 58-46, but CNU outscored the Cavs 18-9 down the final stretch.

Stewart and Sarnor led the offensive charge for the Cavs as Stewart led all scorers on the night with 21 points while Sarnor put up 16 for his ninth double digit scoring effort of the year.

The Cabrini men's basketball team will be back in action on Friday, Dec. 30 as the Cavaliers face Averett University in their second game of the Captains Shootout at the Freeman Center in Newport News. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m.
