Cavaliers top Cougars in final game of 2022

Newport News, Va. – The Cabrini University men's basketball team came from behind Friday afternoon to top Averett University 63-51 in their final game of 2022 at the Captains Shootout in the Freeman Center.

Friday afternoon's game began slowly for both teams as there were only 18 combined points by the midway point of the first half. With 8:33 left, an Emannuel Mosely jumper put the Cavaliers (5-7) up 13-9 as Cabrini held the lead for the next three minutes. With 7:12 left, the Cougars (6-7) outscored the Cavs 14-6 to take a 25-19 lead into the break.

In the second half, Ahmadu Sarnor got Cabrini out to hot a start as the sophomore sank a jumper in the first 10 seconds to cut the deficit to just four, 25-21. A minute later, Sarnor cut it to 25-24 with a triple and gave Aquil Stewart the opportunity to take the lead as he sank a layup with 17:40 remaining. With 10:09 left, the Cougars took their final lead of the game as Jem Lowrance hit a 3-pointer to put Averett up 39-36. At the 8:23 mark, the Cavs took back a 40-39 lead on a layup from Malik Bailey and did not look back as Cabrini outscored Averett 20-12 down the final stretch. With less than 2:00 remaining, Donoven Mack put the game on ice with a fast-break layup to make it a three-possession game and seal the win for the Cavaliers.

For the second straight game, Stewart led all Cabrini scorers as the sophomore put up 20 on the heels of a 21-point performance the night before. Ryan Byars tallied double figure points as he totaled 12 on the day while Sarnor notched his third double-double of the year as the sophomore put up 17 points and grabbed 14 boards.

The Cabrini men's basketball team will return to action in 2023 as the Cavaliers open Atlantic East play on Wednesday, Jan. 4 as they play host to Marymount University. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m.
