Women's Basketball closes 2022 with win over Brooklyn, 75-67

RADNOR, Pa. – Putting three players in double figures, the Cabrini University women's basketball team snapped its seven-game losing streak with a 75-67 win over Brooklyn College in the final game of 2022 for the Cavs.

Cabrini (3-9) got 16 points from Abby Paolini, 14 from Ella Gordon and 12 points from Miranda Liebtag in the win. Liebtag had a game-high 16 rebounds as the Cavs had a 55-50 lead on the glass against the Bulldogs (4-7).

Brooklyn was led by Gianna Gotti who had 28 points, 12 rebounds, six assists and six steals on the day.

The Cavs scored 25 points in the final ten minutes to secure the win after trailing 53-50 after three. The Cavs started the fourth quarter on a 13-0 run over the first 3:48 capped by a three-pointer from Gordon with 6:12 left to go up 63-53. The Cavs made four three-pointers during that stretch.

Brooklyn would get as close as five (68-63) with 2:44 left in the quarter on a jumper by Gotti, but, could get no closer.

After two foul shots by Gotti made the score 70-65 with 2:25 left, a layup by Katie Rodriguez followed by two foul shots from Paolini sealed the game.

It was a defensive battle in the first quarter, until Cabrini broke open a 7-7 tie by scoring the last seven points of the first quarter. Paolini scored six of the seven points during the run, giving the Cavs a 14-7 lead at the end of one.

In the second quarter, Cabrini saw the lead whittle down to one point at 26-25 with 2:11 left, but got a jumper from Liebtag with 1:52 left in the half to give the Cavs a 28-25 lead. A three-pointer by Gordon at the buzzer gave Cabrini a 34-27 lead.

Leading by ten at 48-38 with 4:20 left the third quarter, Cabrini saw the Bulldogs go on a 10-0 run to tie the score at 48-all with 1:55 left.

With the score tied at 50-all, Brooklyn got a three-pointer from Mary Dolgin with 23 seconds left to take the 53-50 lead.   

Rodriguez finished with five blocks on the night, with Liebtag picking up three steaks while Brielle Fitzpatrick had two.

Cabrini will open the new year with an Atlantic East contest against Marymount on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
