Game Recap: Basketball (Men) |

Late Comeback Falls Short in Neuman Loss

RADNOR, PA – The Cabrini men's basketball team closed the home portion of its regular season slate tonight at Nerney Field House, falling just shy of an upset win over the Neumann Knights.

With tonight's 68-65 loss, the Cavaliers sit at 4-7 in the Atlantic East Conference with just one game to play. The Blue and White is currently tied with Immaculata for the fourth seed, with Saturday's results to make the determination of home court advantage with the two teams meet in Monday's conference tournament opener.

Tonight's action featured seven lead changes and 10 ties, with the final deadlock coming with just two minutes left on the clock. Neumann led 65-59 with 3:36 to play before senior Ryan Byars completed a three point play to pull Cabrini to within 65-52.

Both teams had empty possessions before sophomore Aquil Stewart found senior Brice Parks for a game-tying three with 2:05 left on the clock.

Tight defense on both ends of the floor kept the game tied at 65 until Neumann's Ryan Starr split a pair of free throws with just under a minute to play.

The Cavaliers had a shot to grab a late lead, but a jumper rimmed out. A Cabrini foul sent Starr back to the line where he converted two attempts at the stripe. Following a Neumann timeout, the Cavaliers had one final chance, but again their three point attempt missed the mark.

Four Cavaliers scored in double figures in tonight's setback, with Byars leading the way with 13 points and six rebounds. Sophomore Milton Robinson drained each of his four three point attempts en route to a career best 12 points, while Stewart and freshman Donoven Mack added 11 point each.

Both teams went back and forth in a competitive first half, but an 8-0 run midway through the first half pushed Neumann's lead to a game high 19-10 at the 12:35 mark.

The Cavaliers slowly chipped away, regaining the lead at 26-25 after back to back threes by Mack and Robinson. The lead swung back and forth several times over the final six minutes of the stanza before the teams headed back to the locker rooms tied at 35.

The Knights scored the opening six points of the second but the Cavaliers would not go away, keeping the game within reach. Neumann extended its lead back to 52-45 after a Starr triple, before Cabrini answered.

The Blue and White used a 10-2 spurt to regain the lead on a Robinson three with 7:35 to play. Neumann responded with an 8-1 run of their own to take a 56-59 lead with 3:36 left on the clock.

Starr led the Knights with 17 points, including 15 in the second half, while sophomore Jalen Vaughs paired 15 points and 12 rebounds.

The Cavaliers will head north on Saturday, as they will close their regular season at Marywood. Game time is scheduled for 3pm in Scranton, PA.
