CLERMONT, FL – The Cabrini softball team made its 2022 debut this morning splitting a pair of games in Clermont, FL. The Cavaliers topped Adrian College 4-0 before falling to Saint Mary's (MN) 10-4.
The Blue and White will return to action in the morning, as it faces Moravian College at 9am, followed by an 11:15 am tilt with Calvin University.
Cabrini 4, Adrian 0
The Cavaliers grabbed an early lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first. Sophomore
Ariana Mirenda opened the inning with a walk before stealing second. Classmate
Madison Gugel's double drove in the first run of the season. The sophomore stole third before scoring on a single bu senior
Kaitlyn Martin.
The two runs proved to be more than junior pitcher
Avery Byrnes needed. Byrnes tossed a complete game shutout, allowing just five hits against a career best 11 strikeouts.
Cabrini added single runs in the third and fifth innings, as Gugel drove in Mirenda on both occasions.
Gugel finished the opener with a pair of hits and three RBI, while Mirenda went 2-2 with three runs scored. Both also notched three stolen bases in the win.
Saint Mary's (MN) 10, Cabrini 4
The Blue and White fell behind in the bottom of the first, as the Cardinals plated three runs before adding a solo run in the third.
The Cavaliers mounted a two out rally in the top of the fourth. With runners on second and third, freshman
Dorian Ilyes' single plated Martin. Two batters later, fellow rookie
Abby Tobelmann's bases loaded single scored sophomore
Kelsey Huling.
SMC plated three more runs in the bottom of the frame, but the Cavaliers got two back in the fifth. Gugel opened with a single before advancing to third on a Martin double. The sophomore then stole home before Martin scored on a double by fellow senior
Emily Wargo.
Any hopes of a comeback were dashed in the bottom of the sixth, as the Cardinals scored three runs on four hits, including three extra base knocks.
Gugel and Ilyes tallied two hits each in the nightcap, while Martin scored twice. Freshman
Sammi Sisolak suffered the loss, surrendering 10 earned runs on 15 hits and four strikeouts over six innings.
