GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA – The Cabrini men's basketball team could not overcome an early Gwynedd Mercy run, one that put the Cavaliers in a double digit hole just seven minutes into the action.
While the Blue and White pulled to within five points midway through the second half, it wasn't enough, as Cabrini fell to 3-5 in the Atlantic East Conference with a 68-55 loss at Gwynedd Mercy.
Sophomore
Milton Robinson led the Cavaliers with 11 points in 15 minutes off the bench, while classmate
Josh Jones added 10 points. Senior
Ryan Byars paired nine points and nine rebounds, while sophomore
Aquil Stewart notched 10 assists.
The Griffins built an early 10-4 lead before freshman
Donoven Mack drained a three to cut the deficit in half just over three minutes into the action. Over the next four minutes, Gwynedd Mercy used a 10-2 spurt to extend its lead to 20-9 at the 13 minute mark.
Robinson stopped the Griffins run with back to back three pointers, but the home side responded with a 7-0 run to take a 27-15 lead with nine minutes left in the first half.
While the Cavaliers shot north of .450 from the field in the opening 20 minutes, they could not overcome 12 turnovers which led to 17 Gwynedd Mercy points, as Cabrini wen into the half trailing 35-25.
The Blue and White scored the first four points of the second half, but minutes later, the Griffins pushed their lead back to 13 points at the 15:00 mark.
Despite facing a double digit deficit, the Cavaliers would not go away, slowly diminishing the Griffins' lead. A Jones offensive rebound and put back pulled Cabrini to within 53-48 with 6:33 to play. Gwynedd Mercy quickly regained control of the game, using a 13-2 spurt to build a game high 66-50 lead with just 86 seconds to play.
Manny Clark led Gwynedd Mercy with 25 points, while Donaven Spencer adder 10 points.
The Cavaliers will look to snap their two game skid on Wednesday, when they welcome Marymount University to Nerney Field House. Tip is slated for 8pm.
