GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA - The Cabrini women's basketball team had their six game win streak snapped this afternoon after falling to the hosting Gwynedd Mercy University Griffins by a 67-53 final.
With the loss, the Cavaliers moved into a tie with the Griffins for the second seed in the Atlantic East Conference (AEC).
For the third consecutive game Cabrini's offense was led by graduate student
Ashley Tutzauer as she finished with a game high 20 points, while junior
Miranda Liebtag finished second on the team with 14 points and a team high nine rebounds. Sophomore
Katie Rodriguez, the reigning back-to-back, AEC Defensive player of the week had six points, eight boards and three steals.
The Blue and White got off to a slow start as the Gwynedd Mercy offense doubled up the Cavs 16-8 through the first 9:32 of the game. With under a minute to play in the first Cabrini responded with a 7-0 run, highlighted a three pointer from senior guard
Dani Tyrell with four seconds remaining in the quarter to pull within one, 16-15.
After going toe-to-toe through the first five minutes of the second the Cavaliers were troubled by fouls late in the quarter as the Griffins went on a 10-0 run to head into the break up 37-25. In the second frame alone, Gwynedd Mercy made 11-of-11 free throw attempts compared to zero attempts for the Cavaliers. The Cavs were also hindered by 4-for-19 (21/05%) shooting from the field in the second frame.
The third quarter featured a more balanced performance from the Blue and White as neither team was able to string together a run of more than four consecutive points. The Cavaliers' defense forced four turnovers in the quarter and limited the Griffins to 4-16 from the field but it was not enough as Gwynedd Mercy maintained at least a 10 point advantage through the entire third quarter.
In the fourth, the duo of Liebtag and Tutzauer hit back-to-back shots from beyond the arc to bring the Cavs back within single digits, 53-46, with just over eight minutes to play. The Griffins' Elise Sylvester ended the run with a layup and Gwynedd Mercy outscored Cabrini 14-7 over the final eight minutes to walk away with the aforementioned 67-53 home victory.
Haley Crossley let the Griffins with 18 points and 18 rebounds, Sylvester and Lynzie Eggers also fished the game in double figures with 15 and 12 points respectively.
Gwynedd Mercy made 21-of-25 free throw attempts on the day compared to just 2-of-3 for the Cavaliers.
Following today's action, the Blue and White fall to 10-10 overall and 5-3 in the AEC. As mentioned. The Cavaliers will return to Nerney Field House this Wednesday to face Marymount University. Tipoff is scheduled for 6PM.
