Cabrini's Comeback Attempt Falls Short in 9-8 Loss to Widener

RADNOR, PA – The Cabrini women's lacrosse team nearly erased a three goal fourth quarter deficit, but its comeback attempt fell short, as the Cavaliers suffered a 9-8 loss to Widener at Edith Robb Dixon Field.

Senior Olivia Little paced the Blue and White with five points on two goals and three assists to go with four ground balls and four draw controls.

Fellow senior Dana Carlson added three goals and two caused turnovers, while classmate Shea Neary notched a pair of markers and six draw controls. Sophomore Caroline Gallagher added a goal to her three caused turnovers and two ground balls.

Senior goaltender Sam Hamalak tallied 13 saves and five ground balls in the loss and has now recorded 28 saves in her last two outings.

The Cavaliers grabbed an early lead, as Little found Carlson for the game's opening goal at the 12:19 mark. Cabrini held its lead until the 5:43 mark of the period, when Widener evened the score.

The Pride grabbed its first lead of the night midway through the second quarter, but the Blue and White responded with three unanswered goals. Neary, Carlson and Gallagher found the back of the cage in the span of two minutes, as the Cavaliers climbed in front 4-2.

As the Cavaliers looked to carry the game's momentum into the halftime break, the Pride with a pair of goals in the final four minutes of the second quarter to even the score at 4-4 at the half.

The visitors carried their momentum into the third quarter with three unanswered markers in the period, building an advantage they would not relinquish. Little and Carlson connected with 90 seconds left in the third to cut the deficit to 7-5, but Widener regained its three goals cushion in the final minute of the period.

Trailing 8-5 entering the fourth, Little began the comeback with a free position goal at the 13:59 mark. A Widener goal pushed the visitor's lead back to three goals, but Neary and Little converted free position shots at the 8:36 and 6:36 marks to slice the Pride's lead to 9-8.

Both teams had chances to score in the game's final minutes, including a two minute extra woman opportunity for the Cavaliers, but neither team could find the correct scoring combination.

The Pride owned a slight 32-30 advantage in shots, including 11-4 in the third quarter. The teams also combined for 25 free position shots, but converted just seven.

Gab cohen, Amber Bretz and Katie Ward marked the scoring column twice for the Pride, with Bretz adding eight draw controls, five ground balls and three caused turnovers to her stat line. Maddie Medve posted 12 saves in the Widener cage.
