Diamond Cavs Extend Win Streak to Seven with Dramatic Victories over Haverford

Dino throws strikeout to secure the victory in the night cap.

RADNOR, PA - The Cabrini baseball team stayed red hot this afternoon as they swept the Haverford College Fords in a non-conference double header.

Game One: Cabrini 8, Haverford 2
A four run fifth inning propelled the Blue and White to a come-from-behind 8-2 victory in game one.

Sophomore Zack Brook powered the offense as the outfielder went 2-3 at bat with a run and one RBI.

Seniors Mack McKisson and Gil Peralta, along with graduate student Brendan Van Belle, rounded out the Cavs to mark the hit column. Peralta high pointed the bunch with a RBI-double to right field and two runs scored.

The Cavs received a strong start from senior Jonathan Baker who secured his team leading third win of the season. The senior logged five innings and allowed six hits and two earned, while striking out two. Freshman Dom Marotta would collect the save after retiring the Fords' lineup on a strikeout and 4-6-3 double play in the top of the seventh.

After two scoreless innings to start the day, McKisson made a highlight-reel diving catch in left center field followed by 5-4-3 double play to keep it scoreless after three.

The Fords broke the scoreless drought the following inning with three hits for two runs.

Cabrini responded in the bottom of the fourth as sophomore Zack Brook doubled to right field before advancing on a passed ball and scoring on a Brendan Van Belle single.

After another scoreless inning for Haverford, four consecutive walks followed by a balk in the bottom of the fifth would give the Cavs their first lead of the game, 3-2. Brook followed with a RBI-groundout to shortstop and Christian Strickland increased the score to 5-2 with a sacrifice fly out to left field.

After a 1-2-3 inning for the Fords, the Diamond Cavs continued to press adding three runs in the bottom of the sixth, highlighted by Peralta's aforementioned double, en route to the 8-2 victory.

Game Two: Cabrini 3, Haverford 2
The Cavaliers escaped with a dramatic 3-2 victory behind some early offense and stout pitching, including freshman Brian Dino's seven strikeouts in three innings of work.

Fellow freshman Jordan Silvestri would earn the victory, his second of the season, after coming on in relief of starter Mack McKisson who kept the Fords off the board for four innings.

Five Cavaliers collected a single hit, but it was seniors Earl Kochel IV and Gil Peralta who highlighted the game as each hit solo home runs in the bottom of the third.

Kochel kicked off the scoring for the Blue and White and Peralta doubled the lead three batters later, 2-0.

A 5-4-3 double play got Cabrini out of trouble in the top of the fourth and the Cavs carried that momentum into the bottom of the inning as they rallied to load the bases before John Sepe grounded into a double play but it was senior Dustin Sutton who earned the eventual game winner as he advanced home on the play.

McKisson, Silvestri and Dino would keep the game scoreless for Haveford until the top of the ninth. After striking out five of the last six times at the plate the Fords narrowed the margin to one on three hits and an error. With batters on first and second, two outs on the board and a full count, Dino threw his game high seventh strikeout of the day to secure the dramatic victory.

After today's action, the Cavaliers improve to 13-4 while also running their win streak to a seven games. The program record is nine consecutive wins, set during the 2019 season. They will look to keep things rolling on Wednesday, March 23rd when they host Rosemont once again. First pitch is slated for 3:30pm.
