Diamond Cavs' Upset Bid Falls Short vs. #7 Rowan

RADNOR, PA – The Diamond Cavs' bid for a statement victory fell short, as the Cavaliers fell to No. 7 Rowan today at Cabrini Carroll Field.

The Blue and White grabbed an early lead, as sophomore Zack Brook's two out double scored senior Gil Peralta. Unfortunately, the lead was short-lives, as the Profs grabbed the lead in the top of the second.

Rowan needed just one base hit, a leadoff double, to plate three runs, as the visitors took advantage of an error, two hit batters and a bases loaded walk.

The Profs added to their lead in the third after loading the bases with no outs. Senior Eric DiDomnic's single scored a pair of runs, before graduate student Trip McCaffrey drove in two runs with a two out single through the left side.

Rowan's lead grew in the fourth on senior Ryan Murphy's solo home run down the left field line.

The Cavaliers began their comeback with a two out rally in the bottom of the fourth. Senior Dustin Sut-ton and sophomore Pat Toal reached on singles, before freshman Billy D'Ambrosia's double plated Sutton. Toal then crossed the plate on an RBI single up the middle off the bat of senior Earl Kochel IV.

Both teams had chances to add to their run totals, but combined to strand seven runner on base over the next 2.5 innings.

Cabrini cut further into its deficit in the bottom of the seventh, as Brook blasted his team-leading sixth home run of the campaign.

The Cavaliers had the chance to plater more runs in the eighth, as D'Ambrosia and Toal reached sec-ond and third with one out, but were stranded on the base paths.

The Profs threatened to add insurance runs in the top of the ninth, but freshman James Mercante pitched out of bases loaded jam to keep the Blue and White deficit at 8-4 heading into the bottom of the ninth.

After two quick outs, the Cavaliers looked to make another two out rally. Brook doubled off the wall in left center. Graduate student Steven Priest then took his place on second after a double off the left field wall, scoring Brook. That would be the final hit for the Blue and White.

Brook led Cabrini with a 3-5 performance, including a double and a home run, with two RBI and two runs scored.

Senior pitcher Jonathan Baker fell to 4-2 on the year after surrendering seven earned runs on seven hits with four strikeouts in 4.0 innings. Sophomore Dom Marotta and Mercante combined for five in-nings of scoreless relief, surrendering just five hits.

Murphy went 4-5 with three runs scored for the Profs, while sophomores Anthony Schooley and Pat-rick Defeciani added two hits each. Sophomore lefty Ben Iervolino claimed his first win of the season after allowing three earned runs on six hits in five innings of work.

The Cavaliers will look to bounce back on Sunday, when they head to Chester, PA to face Widener University. First pitch is scheduled for 12pm.
