RADNOR, PA – After six attempts to make its home debut, the Cabrini softball team made the most of its first home games of the 2022 season, as the Cavaliers scored a pair of wins over Immaculata at Cabrini Field.
Junior
Avery Byrnes tossed five innings of no hit ball, while sophomore
Madison Gugel bashed her first home run of the season in a 4-3 victory in the opener. In the nightcap, the teams combined for 25 hits, including 11 extra base knocks, as Cabrini claimed an 11-8 victory.
The Cavaliers will have little time to enjoy today's wins, as they will visit Gwynedd Mercy on Tuesday at 3pm.
Game 1: Cabrini 4, Immaculata 3
The Blue and White threatened in the bottom of the second inning, loading the bases with no outs. But failed to send anyone across the plate. Cabrini broke through in the third, as sophomore
Ariana Mirenda opened the frame with a bunt single before Gugel gave the Cavaliers a 2-0 lead with her first home run of the season.
Cabrini added to its lead in the bottom of the fifth. Gugel opened the frame with a single before scoring on a single by freshman
Shauna Stotler.
After keeping the Mighty Macs off balance for five plus innings, they finally got to Byrnes, scoring a run on their first two hits of the day.
The Blue and White added an important insurance run in the sixth, when freshman
Abby Tobelmann scored on a wild pitch. Cabrini threatened to add to its 4-1 lead, loading the bases with one out, but could not plate another run.
The run proved to be important, as Immaculata loaded the bases with no outs. A walk and one out sacrifice fly plated a pair of runs, pulling the visitors to within 4-3 before Byrnes recorded her 13th strikeout of the day.
Gugel, Stotler and sophomore
Kelsey Huling recorded two hits each, with Gugel diving in two and scoring twice.
Game 2: Cabrini 11, Immaculata 8
The Cavaliers wasted little time grabbing a lead in the nightcap, as 10 players stepped into the batter's box. Cabrini immediately loaded the bases before Stotler's single scored Mirenda. Following the first out of the game, Huling, senior
Emily Wargo and sophomore
Emma Barbera recorded RBI singles before a Tobelmann sacrifice extended Cabrini's lead to 5-0.
The Mighty Macs climbed right back into the game in the top of the third as Cat Knoll drilled a grand slam, the first of her two home runs in the game.
The Blue and White got one of the runs back in the bottom of the frame, on Huling's solo blast before the Mighty Macs responded with a solo homer in the top of the fourth.
Cabrini extended its lead in the fourth. Senior
Kaitlyn Martin plated Mirenda with a sacrifice bunt. Gugel then scored on a double steal, extending the lead to 8-5.
The Cavaliers doubled the lead in the fifth with three runs on four hits. The two out rally began with Mirenda's RBI double to score Barbera. The sophomore then stole third and scored on a wild pitch. Gugel then single before scoring on a Martin double.
Again, those three runs proved to be important, as the Mighty Macs looked to mount a late rally. Knoll recorded her second dinger of the afternoon, a two run blast pulling Immaculata to within 11-7. Three batters later, the visitors added another run, taking advantage of a Blue and White error. Byrnes then came in to pitch, stranding three base runners to seal the victory.
Freshman hurler
Sammi Sisolak improved to 5-3 after allowing six earned runs on nine hits with six strikeouts. Gugel went 4-4 with three runs scored, while Mirenda and Wargo tallied three base knocks.
