RADNOR, PA – The Diamond Cavs' late rally fell short, as the Cavaliers fell to the Atlantic East Conference leading Immaculata Mighty Macs today at Cabrini Carroll Field.
Senior
Gil Peralta made an impressive diving catch on a lineout to shortstop to open the game, en route to three scoreless innings of play. The visitors managed to grab the lead in the top of the fourth on back to back batters being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, 2-0.
The Cavs responded with one run in the bottom of the inning as Peralta reached first on an error and then advanced to third on sophomore
Zack Brook's single which was also Cabrini's first hit of the game. Graduate student
Steven Priest's sacrifice fly out to right field plated Peralta to get the Diamond Cavs on the board, 2-1.
After a scoreless 1-2-3 fifth inning for both teams Immaculata quickly loaded the bases in the top of the sixth on a walk, single and an error to set the Mighty Macs Joey Wright up for a grand slam to pull ahead 6-1.
After a 4-6-3 double play to begin the bottom of the sixth Peralta singled through the left side to swing momentum back in favor of the Blue and White. Another single by Brook plated Peralta for his second run of the day, 6-2.
Center fielder
Mack McKisson relieved freshman
James Mercante in the top of the seventh and after a single to left field the Diamond Cavs made a 6-4-3 double play en route to a scoreless inning for the visitors.
A Mighty Macs pitching change to begin the bottom of the seventh sparked the Cavs as they picked up two runs on a pairs of hits from sophomore
Pat Toal and freshman
Sean Glatts, a walk and a balk, 6-4.
After another quick inning for both teams the Mighty Macs knotched one run on an RBI-double to right center field in the top of the ninth to increase their lead to three, 7-4.
In the bottom of the ninth two of the Cavs first three at-bats struck out but senior
Dustin Sutton made it to first on a walk. With the game on the line, freshman
Billy D'Ambrosia entered as a pinch hitter and hit a single, Sutton advanced to second on the play. Senior
Garrett Laraia followed suit as he loaded the bases with a single to right field to set McKisson up to potentially play the hero.
McKisson got every bit of the final pitch but the cards were not in the Cavaliers favor as the Mighty Macs center fielder snatched the game deciding out at the wall to end the game 7-4.
Sophomore starting pitcher
Dom Marotta fell to 1-2 on the year after surrendering five hits in 3.0 innings. Freshman
James Mercante combined for three innings of relief, surrendering five hits and six runs. McKisson allowed one run on two hits and a walk, he also threw a team high three strikeouts.
On the mound for the Mighty Macs starter Jason Hughes and closer Trevor Wagner combined for 11 strikeouts with six and five, respectively. Hughes earned the win while Wagner picked up the save.
The Cavaliers will look to bounce back on Monday, April 18
th, when they head to Immaculata, PA for a rematch with the Mighty Macs. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 3PM.
