#12 Cavaliers Fall to #2 Salisbury in 2OT Thriller

RADNOR, PA – The No. 12 Cavaliers were just two minutes from scoring an upset of No. 2 Salisbury, but after nearly 65 minutes of action, the Cabrini men's lacrosse team closed the night on the losing end of a 10-9 double overtime thriller.

Trailing 5-2 after 30 minutes of action, the Blue and White grabbed the game's momentum in the third quarter. Sophomore Max Drift netted a man-up goal at the 10:21 mark of the third, two minutes before junior Dillon McManus pulled the Cavaliers to within 5-4 with 8:28 left in the period.

Salisbury's Cross Ferrara gave the visitors a two goal cushion in the second minute of the fourth, snapping an 18 minute scoreless drought for the Sea Gulls.

The Cavaliers began their comeback 22 seconds later on McManus' second marker of the evening. Sophomore Logan Cleary evened the score at 6-6 just 40 seconds later, and the momentum was squarely on the Blue and White sideline.

The score remained deadlocked for more than seven tense minutes before junior Mikey Vanaman found Drift to give the Cavaliers their first lead of the night. Just south of a minute later, it was senior Evan Trizonis who marked the score column, with freshman Jake Schneider finding the back of the net to give Cabrini a seemingly comfortable 9-6 lead with just 3:34 to play.

The home team committed three turnovers over the next minute, giving the Sea Gulls a chance. Salisbury's Charlie White scored with just under two minutes to play. The visitors won the ensuing faceoff, but Cabrini forced a defensive stop before another turnover retuned the ball to the Sea Gulls.

Again, the visitors took advantage, as Jared Bromwell pulled Salisbury to within 9-8 with 11:130 to play. The senior added his third goal of the night with 31 seconds to play evening the score at 9-9, sending the game to overtime.

Junior PJ Hewitt gave the Cavaliers a scoring chance in the opening seconds of overtime, as the junior scooped the ground ball off the opening faceoff and forced Salisbury goaltender ZJ Shahin to make a save.

While both teams recorded possessions and shots, both also committed turnovers that thwarted potential scoring opportunities, sending the game to a second overtime period.

Salisbury won the opening faceoff of the second OT period, and again the Cabrini defense was up to the task. The Cavaliers forced a defensive stop and secured the ball, but the team's 22nd turnover of the night proved to be the most costly, as Sea Gulls' graduate student Cross Ferrarra score the final of his four goals on the night just 20 seconds later.

After being outshot 24-10 and recording 11 turnovers in the opening 30 minutes, the Blue and White found their rhythm after the break, outshooting the Sea Gulls 25-8 over the first 28 minutes of the second half. The Cavaliers also pressured the visitors into 10 turnovers during that period, while committing just three.

The Sea Gulls turned the tables after Schneider's goal with 3:34 to play, as the Cavaliers committed five turnovers with three failed clears on recorded just one shot.

Drift and Vanaman led the Cavaliers with two goals each, while Vanaman paired a goal and two assists. Senior Jake Huey went 14-24 at the faceoff X and grabbed a game-high 10 ground balls, while Vanaman and graduate student Jake Goss secured three loose balls each.

Graduate student Matt Nestler suffered the loss in the Blue and White cage despite recording 13 saves, while seniors Zack Kaut and Matt Hughes joined junior Kyle Kutyla with two caused turnovers each.

The Cavaliers have little time to dwell on tonight's loss, as they will celebrate Senior Day tomorrow at 1pm with a visit from Gwynedd Mercy University. The opening faceoff is slated for 1pm at Edith Robb Dixon Field.
