Women's Lacrosse Clinches Tourney's Top Seed with Win at Gwynedd Mercy

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA – The Cabrini women's lacrosse team secured the number one seed and home field advantage in the upcoming Atlantic East Conference championship today, with a 21-7 win at Gwynedd Mercy.

The Cavaliers will also earn a bye into next Wednesday's tournament semifinal round against a team and at a time yet to be determined.

Ten Cavaliers marked the scoring column, as the club extended its current win streak to five games. The duo of seniors Dana Carlson and Olivia Little led the way, combining for eight goals and seven assists. Little added six draw controls, three caused turnovers and three ground balls, while Carlson collected five draws.

Fellow senior Shea Neary added two goals, five draw controls, four caused turnovers and four ground balls. Classmate Kelly Sweeney had a career day, matching career highs with two goals, two assists and four points.

Graduate student Ashley Tutzauer scored three times, matching sophomore Olivia Pace and freshman Morgan McClintock with three points.  

Senior goaltender Sam Hamalak secured the win with three first half saves, wile freshman added five stops in 30 minutes of relief.

Little opened the scoring just over two minutes into the game, but the Griffins responded immediately. Goals by Carlson and Tutzauer pushed the lead to 4-1 before Tutzauer's second marker gave the Cavaliers a 5-2 lead after 15 minutes.

Cabrini essentially put the game away in the second quarter, outscoring Gwynedd 9-0. Seven Cavaliers recorded goals in the stanza, including Little, who recorded a hat trick in less than eight minutes. Cabrini outshot the home team 17-0 in the period, pressured the Griffins into eight turnovers and won seven of the nine draws in the quarter to carry a 14-2 lead into the halftime break.

The Griffins inched closer in the third, as Sweeney's goales marked Cabrini's only tallies in the period.  A Gwynedd goal in the early second of the fourth pulled the home side to within 16-7, but the Blue and White shut the door on the Gwynedd attack and recorded five fourth quarter goals of its own.

Kristin Varilla and Anna Grace Bernicker scored three goals each for the Griffins, while Reilly Owens notched 13 saves.

The Cavaliers will close their regular season slate on Wednesday, when they travel north to face the University of Scranton. Game time is set for 4pm.
