CAMDEN, NJ - The Cabrini University baseball team secured their 24
th this evening with an 8-4, non-conference win at Rutgers-Camden.
Sophomore
Christian Strickland and senior
Gil Peralta paced the offense as they finished 3-4 and 3-5 at the dish, including one double apiece. Strickland added two runs and plated one, while Peralta brought home three and made it around the bases once.
Five other Cavs marked the hit column with exactly one knock a piece, but sophomore
Zack Brook highlighted the bunch thanks to a two RBI triple in the third.
Freshman
Sean Glatts drove in one run as well.
Mike Valerio earned the start for the Blue and White and tossed seven innings of four run ball, although only two were earned. The sophomore scattered four hits and struck out four en route to his third victory of the season.
Rutgers-Camden jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first but were able to respond with four runs, on four hits, in the top of fourth. Strickland doubled down the left line to start the inning, advanced to third on a wild pitch and made it home on a balk, 1-1. An RBI-single from Peralta preceded the aforementioned triple by Brook as the Cavs took a 4-1 lead into the bottom of the third.
The Scarlet Raptors quickly responded as they with an unearned run in the bottom half of the frame.
After a scoreless fourth, a one-bagger followed by a walk set the stage for Glatts as he fround graduate student
Steven Priest home with and RBI single through the right side. Strickland followed with another RBI single, with a hit through the left side, 6-2.
Rutgers would once again trim the deficit to in the bottom of the innings thanks in part to a Cavs throwing error and wild pitch for another unearned run.
Peralta handed the Cavaliers some insurance with his two RBI single in the top of the seventh to extend the lead to 8-3.
Freshman
Dom Marotta, who entered in the eighth, put in two innings worth of work, striking out three to earn the save. With three saves on the season, Marotta is just two shy of tying the single-season program record.
As mentioned, the Cavaliers improve to 24-8 overall and remain at 8-4 in AEC play.
The Blue and White will look to run their win streak to six games when they host Gwynedd Mercy University on Friday, April 29
th. Game time is slated for 3:30pm.
