Women's Lacrosse Tops Colorado after Strong 2nd Half

RADNOR, PA – The Cabrini women's lacrosse team used a dominant second half performance, as it scored an important out of region victory, topping the Colorado College Tigers 21-12 at Edith Robb Dixon Field.

Holding an 8-7 lead at the halftime break, the Blue and White erupted for 13 second half goals to pull away from the Tigers.

Seniors Dana Carlson and Olivia Little netted six goals each and combined for 15 points, while graduate student Ashley Tutzauer paired five goals and two assists. Sophomore Caroline Gallagher added a pair of fourth quarter markers, taking the ball coast to coast on both occasions.

The Cavaliers recorded 52 shots on the day, the club's most since posting the same number in a 16-15 loss to Scranton on April 23, 2019. Little accounted for 15 of those attempts, three more than Carlson.

Cabrini sparked its attack with 22 draw controls, including 13 from senior Shea Neary and six from Little.  Eight Cavaliers also recorded at least one of the club' 18 ground balls, while Tutzauer's four leading the way.

Senior goaltender Sam Hamalak anchored the Blue and White defense with five saves, three ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers.

The Tigers built an early lead with two goals in the opening four plus minutes, before Carlson opened Cabrini's scoring at the 10:31 mark. The visitors converted their second woman-down goal of the period to take a 3-1 lead, but the Cavaliers answered with a 4-0 spurt into the second period.

Little and Tutzauer combined for three goals in the final 5:38 of the first quarter, with freshman Morgan McClintock adding another in the opening minute of the second quarter.

Colorado responded with back to back markers to even the score at 5-5 with just north of 10 minutes until the halftime break, but again the Blue and White had an answer. The threesome of Carlson, Little and Tutzauer found the back of the net in a three minute span, extending the Blue and White lead to 8-5.

The Tigers added a pair of goals, separated by 34 seconds, late in stanza, sending the teams into the halftime break with the Cavaliers holding a slim 8-7 lead.

The Cavaliers turned up their offensive pressure in the second half. Once again, it was the threesome of Carlson, Tutzauer and Little that sparked the attack. The group scored in the first half of the third, extending the lead to 11-7.

After a Tigers' goal, Neary and Carlson marked the scoring column before Little converted a free position shot to give the Cavaliers a 14-9 lead after three quarters.

Gallagher opened the fourth with back to back goals. Following a Colorado goal, the Cavaliers reeled off five unanswered goals to put the game away. As was the case all day, it was Carlson, Little and Tutzauer who combined for all five goals and six total points in the run.

Despite winning just two of the nine draws in the decisive third quarter, the Cavaliers outshot the Tigers 9-3 and pressured the visitors into seven turnovers. The home side left no doubt in the fourth, winning nine of 11 draws and firing 15 shots, including nine attempts on target.

Sophomore Caroline Shay and freshman Tobin Lonergran led the Tigers with three goals each, while junior goaltender Natalie Slade posted 14 saves and six ground balls in the loss.

The Cavaliers will return to Atlantic East Conference play on Tuesday, when they head north to Marywood University. Game time is set for 4pm in Scranton, PA.
