Men's Lacrosse Claims 21st Straight Conference Title

RADNOR, PA – The No. 12 Cabrini men's lacrosse team closed the Atlantic East Tournament in the only position its ever known, as champions. The Cavaliers cruised to its 21st consecutive conference championship with today's 25-5 win over number two seed Marymount today at Edith Robb Dixon Field.

With the win, the Cavaliers have secured the league's automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament, slated to begin on Wednesday. The Blue and White will learn its tournament fate on Sunday night at 9pm, when the NCAA broadcasts its Men's Lacrosse Selection show at 9pm on NCAA.com.

Junior Mikey Vanaman was named the game's Most Valuable Player after tying a season high with nine points on for goals and five assists.

Classmate Dillon McManus led all scorers with five goals, while sophomore Max Drift added a season best four goals, all on man-up opportunities. Senior Evan Trizonis added a hat trick, while sophomore Tommy Vaughan joined freshmen Clayton Hollinger and Zack Reigler added two markers each.

The Cavaliers sparked their offensive attack with an impressive 20-33 performance at the faceoff spot. Senior Jake Huey went 12-20 with 10 ground balls, while sophomore John McCormick won six of his eight chances with four ground balls.

The Blue and White defensive effort caused 13 of the Saints' 15 turnovers on the day, with 13 different Cavaliers posting a caused turnover. While Marymount recorded 41 shots on the day, the Cavaliers pressure held the visitors to just 18 shots on target.

When a Saint's shot found its way to the Blue and White goal, Cabrini's three goaltenders were there to make the save.  Graduate student Matt Nestler posted nine saves, five ground balls and a caused turnover, while juniors Rob Pensabene and Rob Farrington added two saves each.

When the two clubs met for their regular season meeting in early April, the Cavaliers struggled to find their offensive rhythm, scoring just three first quarter goals. That was not the case today, as the home side scored early and often.

McManus opened the scoring with two goals in the opening three minutes before Vanaman's first at the 11:26 mark. A pair of Drift man-up goals sandwiched a Vaughan goal. Vaughan added a second late in the first period before a Trizonis goal extended the lead to a commanding 8-0 lead after 15 minutes.

The Blue and White lead swelled to 10-0 early in the second before Marymount found its way onto the score sheet. Late goals by Trizonis, McManus, and Drift extended the lead to 13-1 before the Saints netted two late goals to pull within 13-3 at the half.

The 10 minute break did nothing to slow the Blue and White as Vanaman scored twice early in the third quarter. Following a Marymount goal, the Cavaliers ran off seven unanswered goal in a spurt that spanned the third and fourth quarters to push the advantage to 23-4 with 12 minutes to play.

The Cavaliers recorded 58 shots in the win, the ninth time the club has surpassed the 50 shot plateau. The Blue and White's 25 goals, 15 assists and four man-up goals also rank among the team's best outputs of the season.

Clark Akers scored a pair of goals for the Saints, while Dylan Staley went 13-31 at the faceoff spot and corralled 10 ground balls. Goaltender Brandon Hall paired 12 saves and a pair of ground ballsin the defeat.
