RADNOR, PA - The Diamond Cavs blew past the Centenary University Cyclones with a pair of victories on senior day, thanks in part to a program record six homeruns in the nightcap, and will open host Gwynedd Mercy University in the Atlantic East Conference Tournament opener this Wednesday, May 11
th, at 3PM.
Game One: Cabrini 8, Centenary 3
After a scoreless first, the Cyclones struck first with a solo homerun in the top of the second. The Cavs responded with two runs in the bottom of the frame thanks to a one-bagger by sophomore
Zack Brook, two walks and two batters being hit by a pitch to take their first lead of the game.
A two-RBI double in the top of the third put Centenary ahead, 3-2 but it was off the bat of Brook who gave the Cavs the go ahead run as he hit his first of three homers on the day, a two run long ball up and over center field, 4-3 in favor of the Cavs.
The Cyclones added one hit the following inning but were unable to cut into the two run deficit as they left two on base. Cabrini padded its lead with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. After a pair of walks and a perfectly places bunt senior
Dustin Sutton, fellow Senior
Gil Peralta plated one with a sacrifice fly out and sophomore
Pat Toal highlighted the innings with a two RBI double to center field, 7-3.
Peralta tacked on a solo homerun in the bottom of the sixth and Cabrini held Centenary off the board the rest of the game en route to the 8-3 victory.
Sophomore
Dom Marotta got the start on the mound for the Cavaliers and put in 2.1 innings worth of work as he allowed two earned runs on one hit and two walks, while striking out three. Freshamn
Brian Dino and
Jordan Silvestri combined to pitch the final four plus innings. Dino allowed one run on three hits and a walk, with four strikeouts. Sivestri allowed two hits and a walk over the final two innings.
Brook, two for four at the plate, with two runs and two RBI, and Sutton, two-for-three with a run and an RBI led the Cavaliers with two hits apiece. Peralta, Toal, and
Christian Strickland rounded out the hit column with one apiece.
Game Two: Cabrini 16, Centenary 6
The nightcap featured more offense between the two teams as the Cyclones used 13 hits for six runs, but it proved not enough as the Cavs pushed across 16 runs, backboned by 10 runs across the third and fourth inning.
Brook was one of three Cavaliers to tally three hits, and added three runs scored and a game hits six RBI. Seniors
Mack McKisson and
Garrett Laraia, also connected for three hits apiece. McKisson drove in three RBI's and rounded the bases three times, while Laraia plated one.
Toal, Peralta, and graduate student
Steven Priest also had multiple hits with two all. Sutton, sophomore Kyle Kraustrunk, as well as freshman
Sean Glatts and
Jaden Dickerson, rounded out the hit column with one each. In total, ten different Cavs recorded a hit in game two.
Senior
Mike Valerio toed the rubber in game two and turned in a quality start en route to his fourth victory of the season. The righty tossed five inning of three run ball and scattered seven hits. Sophomore
James Mercante and junior
Alex Pierznik combined for the final four innings.
Similar to game one, the Blue and White got off to a slow start as the Cyclones loaded the bases in the top of the first but were unable to convert any runs. The Cavs managed to grab a 1-0 lead on a Priest RBI double in the bottom of the first but Centenary led 3-1 after two and a half innings of play.
As mentioned earlier, the Diamond Cavs responded with 10 runs over their next two innings, kicked off by an RBI double by Sutton. Later in the same inning, Brook hit a two RBI double and Laraia brought the sophomore home with a triple to right field for four runs in the third and the 5-3 lead.
A quick inning for the Cyclones gave way to six runs on three hits and no error for the Cavaliers in the fourth. McKisson kicked off the rally with a two RBI dinger, his first of two in the nightcap. Peralta followed McKisson with a solo homerun, his second of the day. Brook continued to cushion the lead as he capped the frame with the Cavs third homerun of the innings for three RBI, 11-3.
McKisson and Brook hit their second four-baggers of the day in the seventh.
Pat Toal also hit a long ball in the seventh as the Cavs tallied a program high six homeruns in the nightcap to run away with the aforementioned 16-6 victory.
Following today's game the Cavaliers move to 30-9 overall. As mentioned, they will turn their attention to Wednesday's Atlantic East Conference Tournament opener against the No. 3 seeded Gwynedd Mercy University Griffins. Wednesday's game time is slated for 3PM.
